Great Loughs

The Great Loughs (/ɡɹeɪt lɒxs/) are a series of large, extremely deep freshwater lakes in southeastern Heremonia, that are connected to and flow into the Torrean Sea. Together they form the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world by both area and volume, containing over 18% of the world’s fresh water. The five Great Loughs are, from north to south, Lough Seolta, Lough Lurney, Lough Gráinne, Lough Tee and Lough Rhee.

The largest of the Great Loughs is Lough Tee, which is nearly 1,100 wmi. from north to south, and over 250 wmi. across at its widest point. The smallest is Lough Rhee, at approximately 400 wmi. long by 125 wmi. wide. The longest of the Great Loughs is Lough Lurney, which stretches over 1,800 wmi. from Ballmargath to its Torrean Sea outlet at the island of Moytura. The only Great Lough that is entirely within a single country is Lough Gráinne, located in the United Kingdom of Bréifne. The others form water boundaries between neighboring nations. Lough Seolta is the only Great Lough that crosses the equator into the Northern Hemisphere.

Created by the same tectonic forces that separated the continents of Heberia and Heremonia and formed the Torrean Sea, the Great Loughs first began to appear some 5 million years ago. From earliest times they have been utilized for migration, transportation, fishing and trade, and other human activities. Due to their great size and depth, and ocean-like characteristics such as high waves, strong currents and sustained high winds, the Great Loughs were often referred to as seas in antiquity.

The Great Loughs provide habitat to thousands of aquatic species, and support thousands more along their shores. So important are they to the surrounding area that southeastern Heremonia is often referred to as the Great Loughs Region.
