Book III | Chapter I | The Tunnels Below Report

General Summary

Book III, Chapter I: The Tunnels Below continues where Book III, Chapter I: Past Sins left off.

As Cards kept watch from the townhouse, he noticed a number of rats moving throughout the city, carefully darting between buildings. When he saw a rat scampering across an abandoned street between the town hall and a residential neighborhood, he fired off a shot from his Bolt Rifle, causing the rat to revert into a humanoid shape and run away toward the north end of town.

As Silas and Oliver continued their conversation with Plunk, they witnessed Plunk clutch his chest, fall over, and then get pulled into the floor towards the center of town. Moments later, Oliver felt a strange sensation in his own chest, and was also pulled rapidly from his corporeal form, leaving his body behind on the ground near Silas.

The party reconvened in the center of town to discuss the way forward. Cass noticed that the orbs had all disappeared from town. Upon hearing that Oliver had seemingly died in the town hall, Verst ran into the town hall to investigate. The rest of the party determined that Oliver was not dead, but was not necessarily alive either, and decided it would be best to have Myc, their undead mycelial companion, take his body back to the campsite where Eccistiameak Therxora would *hopefully* be able to assist.

While looking for clues, Verst discovered a cellar beneath the town hall that contained a small hole leading downward. Using his strange magical abilities, Verst misty stepped down through the hole and landed in the tunnel below, and began exploring.

As the party continued to discuss their options, they al realized that the answer to their myriad problems was likely to be somewhere beneath them in these alleged tunnels that Cornelius Plunk had told Silas and Oliver about. They initially tried to follow Verst's path downward, but quickly realized that none of them would fit through the hole Verst teleported through without inaccessible magic. Instead, they returned to the fountain in the center of town, identifying it as the point where the blue orbs had been drawn to.

Through some close examination, they were able to determine that the bottom of the pool created by the fountain was the roof of a subterranean cavern. Cass and Ember teleported in, and were nearly crushed as Cards pushed the fountain into the water, caving the roof of the cistern in and draining the surface pond into the cistern. One by one, the party followed Cass and Ember into the water below.

As the party collected their wits, dried off their equipment, and surveyed their surroundings, Cass noticed a crouched humanoid figure in an adjoining cavern to the east of their position, holding a mote of green arcane energy in their hand and menacingly staring at the party. Initiative was rolled at the end of the session.
