History

The sudden collapse of the Aurean Empire brought about enormous instability and volatility in the regions once under its control as various powers, both old and new, fought to assert dominance. During this period of strife, as is common throughout history, it was the peasants and non-combatants who suffered the most. But the land of Grasteaux had long prided itself on its chivalric traditions, and those traditions married with a peculiar folk belief of the local dragonborn farmers. They venerated a protector spirit they called the Bulwark, and after they successfully drove off attacking bandits, interpreted their victory as a sign of the Bulwark's favor. Inspired, many began to travel to nearby villages and towns, lending aid and the Bulwark's blessings. Over time, legends of incredible feats performed by these Steadfast, as they were known, spread, and a following grew. Eventually they would gain the attention of lordless knights, who lent their knowledge of arms to the fledgling Order. Twelve years after the fall of the Aurean Empire, the Order of Scythe and Shield was formally established.

Tenets of Faith

If you witness a physical or magical attack against someone who is unable or unwilling to defend themselves, defend them. If you know of an imminent attack against non-combatants, defend them. If monsters or beasts threaten a town, drive them back. If you are asked for protection by those who cannot protect themselves, protect them. Seek out the imperiled in the dangerous parts of the world. Know where you will be needed. Accept no payment nor reward. Food and lodging must be provided until your service is done, as long as it is within the means of those you shield. Follow local laws, except when they conflict with your duty. Avoid politics and government.
An oath of protection forms a sacred compact between the Bulwark and your charge. Even if you fall, should it be in the execution of your duties, the Bulwark will honor the compact, and deliver you and your charge to salvation.
