Maria's adoptive parents are members of the Shadow Syndicate, a ruthless international criminal organization with mystical beliefs. She was trained in a variety of advanced martial arts, infiltration and interrogation techniques, and spycraft. She also learned a bit of shadow magic, which she used to enhance her ability to track down and eliminate targets unseen.
Maria was tasked with eliminating a prominent politician and her family but she couldn't go through with it. She doesn't feel guilty for the things she did during her time with the Syndicate, but she now realizes her true calling is to bring down villainous individuals and organizations.
