Theurgist
Theurgists study Thaumaturgy in the hopes of creating new spells. Theurgy is considered to be a branch off of Psychology, as it is the practice of learning to and teaching others to think in specific ways, and associated these chains with words for ease casting.

Qualifications
Due to the nature of their work, the most reputable Theurgists are of course Thaumaturges, but it is not required. To be officially recognized as a Theurgist, also referred to as "Wizards", one needs to attend a college of natural philosophy. Attending these institutes can expensive though, so many Theurgists practice without a license, and are referred to as "Hedge Wizards". Those found to be practicing without a license aren't punished by nobility, regents, or the many institutes of natural philosophy, they have the mindset that any research done in the field of Thaumaturgy is welcome as long as it is safe. Although, religious orders, and citizens take matters into their own hands in this regard, lynching necromancers, demonologists, and witches with some regularity in the cover of night.
Career Progression
As one can guess, the more chains or "Spells" a Theurgist creates, the more renowned they'll be. Besides this, there are no other ways to progress, except for perhaps theft, and fraud, which are serious problems in the Theurgist field that are punished without mercy.
Payment & Reimbursement
Theurgists often keep their chains in large books called spellbooks, and while the nobility and scholars detest the name, its popularity is far too much to be shaken. These chains can be purchased by any willing to pay, this payment includes the service of the Theurgist as they teach the buyer. Often part of the payment is room and board for the Theurgist.
Other Benefits
Nobles often employ Theurgists to work for their houses, doing exclusive research for them into a certain avenue of Thaumaturgy for extended periods of time. They are provided with lavish housing, meals, and payments for the education of the children of the Theurgist in exchange for their research a well in the more extreme contracts.

Purpose
Theurgists play a huge role in society, as Thaumaturgic discoveries can turn the tide of battle, lead to huge breakthroughs in industrial sciences, and in some cases improve the lives of the general population altogether.
Social Status
They are often seen as something of a merchant, not as high as a noble, but someone you would not want to disrespect.
Demographics
Becoming a Theurgist is not that difficult, but often required large amounts of money to officially gain the title. Because of this there are very few Theurgists, larger cities having maybe ten, and smaller towns have one if they're lucky.
History
The practice of Theurgy, or Wizardry as it's called by the common, was originally a offshoot of Natural Philosophy, more specifically Psychology. The field of study was founded by Elwood Olivander, the father of modern technology and of course Thaumaturgy, after his initial discovery and research after the first chain was preformed by his hound, Felix.

No tools are required except and exceptional imagination, a strong mind, and access to someone with an Avian eye.

Theurgist need copious amount of Argent oil.
Workplace
A theurgists lab is covered with notebooks filled to the brim with possible chains, hundreds of empty argent oil containers, and likely tales of elves and fairies from their childhood for inspiration. The smell of argent will be overpowering, which changed scent from person to person, so it may smell of sweets, of freshly baked bread, or even rotting viscera. Their labs will almost always be the lower levels of forts and houses, to keep the Argent oil cool.
