Higa Yoshiaga (He-Guh Yo-She-Ah-Guh)

The Thumb Higa Yoshiaga (a.k.a. Tanaka Hanzo)

The boisterous mariner attempts to sell people fish in the market once more. His companion, a strong, but meager, looking dark elf attends to the stall with an eye that seems more trained than one would initially expect. The dark elf lifts and moves overflowing crates with no effort whatsoever. And what's stranger still is that after the vendor closed, and he was left alone, you could've swore that he just...disappeared.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Higa has a toned, muscular body, standing straight, but not so proud. He shoulders hang low, as he tries to keep a relatively low profile

Identifying Characteristics

He is missing his right index finger.

Special abilities

When the title of The Thumb was passed down from Ban to Higa, he received the blessing of Izpyltia from him as well. This was "Vilandruc's Resonance". This boon granted Higa with immense power. But mortal bodies begin to break down as a result of tapping into this wellspring, so he can only use it sparingly.

This power stems from the mighty strike that Vilandruc blew upon Izpyltia for the attempted theft of his son. The power was so immense that Izpyltia was permanently scarred with the searing might of Vilandruc, which she bestows upon some of her champions. And now, Higa is one of those champions.

Personal history

The muscle of The Crushed Hand, Higa Yoshia is a dark elf who trained to become an Atatatorian Death Knight. His training was successful, but after seeing his friends die on Ishmaars Calluses, he gave up on following that foul destiny and returned home to Hailsoshia at the age of 18, in 161 AH. But he could no longer be seen in public, as what he did is seen as blasphemy, and treason, by Atatatorians and Hailsoshia respectively.
Going by Tanaka Hanzo, this alias’ backstory is that he failed out of True Blade Academy at a young age, having only lost his index finger in a sword fight, which is a true event. After that, his family disowned him, and he began working at The Sea Bones Nest. Working as a low ranking member of the guild, he’s made an honest living there for almost 11 years now, since 156 AH.
In reality, he is affiliated with The Sea Warriors, but only as soon as 6 years ago, in 161 AH. He befriended the guildmaster, Tock Spinebearer, after saving his life from a mutiny during a voyage however, and convinced him to help him make a cover story for himself. Becoming good friends over the years, the two support each other in different endeavors constantly. They consider each other family, something rare for those who trained to become Death Knights.
About a year after befriending Tock, Higa heard a subtle noise during the night in The Sea Bones Nest. Investigating, he discovered two members of The Crushed Hand, The Pinky, Kibe Kaoru, and the former holder of The Thumb’s title, Ban Rei. Escaping out of a window, Kibe left Ban to deal with Higa. Believing him to just be an untrained fish mongrel like most of The Sea Warriors, Ban was quickly proven wrong when Higa drew his sword and attacked with a level of proficiency that none other that an Atatatorian Death Knight could hope to master.
Fighting tooth and nail, Ban was on the losing side of the fight until he was forced to use his gift of Izpyltia. With his git, Ban quickly overpowered Higa with his sheer speed and strength. With Higa at the end of a dagger, Ban offered to take the talented dark elf under his wing, rather than slay him. Agreeing only because he felt honor-bound to train under Ban, Higa agreed. Learning quickly, Higa assumed the title of The Thumb after a year and a half of training, receiving The Thumbs boon from Ban.

Education

From an early childhood, Higa was taught in the ways of swordsmanship just as all other dark elves in Hailsoshia are generally expected to do. He trained at True Blade Academy until the age of 16, at which point he was shipped to Ishmaar's Calluses on Brotar to endure the trial of the Death Knights.

Employment

After getting back to Hailsoshia at the age of 18, Higa found work with The Sea Warriors, and continues to work there, as well as working as The Thumb for The Crushed Hand.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Despite the fact that he gave up his life as a Death Knight, and will never be as powerful as a full fledged knight, Higa is still skilled in swordsmanship. His crowning achievement is that at the age of 16, before he left Hailsoshia, he fought and defeated almost all of the professors in duals. The only one he could not defeat was Headmaster Obic. And while he did not slay any of the professors, Higa was recognized as a promising warrior, who would be the greatest warrior in the Hailo army when he returned from Ishmaars Calluses.

Failures & Embarrassments

Despite making the choice himself, Higa considers walking away from Ishmaars Calluses to be a shameful act, but one he needed to make. When asked about it, Higa has little to say, as he feels like his reasoning for leaving was nothing more than sentimental cowardice.

As well, while defeating the majority of the professors at True Blade Academy, his dual with Headmaster Obic was also his most humbling experience. Higa was so overwhelmed with his hubris from defeating all the other students who'd dual him, and most of the professors. When he challenged Headmaster Obic to a dual, he was warned that it could result in his death. Believing himself superior to the Headmaster, the two engaged in their dual, and in only two swift motions, Headmaster Obic disarmed Higa, and knocked him to the ground. Feeling that slaying an unarmed man would be dishonorable, he allowed Higa to live, but he would be given a reminder of his hubris.
Drawing a dagger, Obic severed Higa's index finger, so he would be reminded that he cannot point anyone out as being below him again. Ashamed, Higa did not lose his reputation as a fierce swordsman, but he no longer challenged others unjustly.

Mental Trauma

During his time at Ishmaars Calluses, Higa became close comrades with another initiate named Yagami Gartholm. Keeping each other company through the first couple of years that they were there, the two became thick as thieves. They'd make sure each other were fed, and had shelter, even if they'd be separated for weeks at a time. Eventually their relationship became romantic, and the two made a blood bond to travel together once their time in the Hailo military was over.

As the years went on, the two became more skilled, and their love grew stronger. One day, a storm overtook the mountains, and the two became separated. Being ambushed by a couple of cyclops, Higa was hurt, but managed to slay the monsters after a time. Moving through the haze of rain, he called for Yagami, but heard no response. Eventually, the blood began to wash down the mountain, washing over Higa's sabatons. He feared for the worst, and soon came to realize that it was the reality. Coming across the gnarled, bloody and ripped apart plate male that once belonged to Yagami, Higa knew that his companion was gone.

From then, Higa left the way of the Death Knight, and returned home. He could no longer see people the same, and reserved his heart entirely to himself. Ever since then, the only real friend he's allowed himself is the mariner, Tock Spinebearer.

Taboos

Whenever possible, Higa tries to not kill other dark elves. The entire reason he gave up becoming a Death Knight was because he couldn't stand watching his people die, so killing them now would feel like a sin to him.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Higa continues working for The Crushed Hand out of an honor-bound commitment he feels towards the prior Thumb, Ban. And he continues living because he has found a good friend in Tock Spinebearer.

Likes & Dislikes

Higa adores those who are empathetic. He believes it to be the highest form of virtue. But on the inverse, Higa doesn't like when people choose to allow themselves to be weak when they can be more.

Virtues & Personality perks

Higa is very empathetic and understanding to people's plights. He chooses to be friends with those who have been dishonored and shunned, knowing the turmoil they feel inside.

Vices & Personality flaws

While not being able to make any meaningful relationship with people, Higa still craves it, but won't allow himself to. Instead, he resorts to listening in on private conversations near peoples windows. He doesn't generally note things, but occasionally he's grow a liking towards a couple, and sometimes stalk them for weeks before suddenly losing interest.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Higa keeps contact with others to a strict minimum, only readily engaging with Tock Spinebearer

Religious Views

Coming from a race that innately worships Ishmaar, Higa worshipped the god of war from a young age, and was taught more about the religion during his time in True Blade Academy. But after his ordeal with Ishmaar's Calluses, became agnostic. Then, after his joining of The Crushed Hand, Higa began to venerate Izpyltia. He does this not necessarily because he chooses to, but because he feels honor bound to due to his involvement with the guild.

Mannerisms

When Higa is working as The Thumb, he stays mute, deciding that nothing he says will have an impact on those he encounters. He stands tall and imposing, to threaten people out of challenging him, and carries the symbol of Ishmaar, a mistletoe, even though he doesn't worship him anymore, just to scare people.

When working at The Sea Bones Nest, however, Higa's attitude is different. He hangs his shoulders low, and tries his best to not look people in their eyes to avoid a conflict. He tries not to talk to others, but is still friendly if he's approached. He works hard, keeping his nose to the grind as much as possible. He talks in a calm, but focused way. He tries very hard to not truly tell anyone anything.
