Ashbury Settlement in Tamaris | World Anvil

Ashbury

Ashbury is an idyllic pastoral village set in Highclere County in Astoria. It's surrounded by hills and forest, and sheep roam freely around the settlement. It's located 20 miles from Highclere, 10 miles from Glouston, and 8 miles from Marsfeld. It's the smallest village in Highclere County, and despite being a mile from the Little Everly River, it holds its own as a popular stopping point for travelers.

Government

The village is run by a parish council which handles all village affairs. Elections are held every five years where any adult in good standing has permission to campaign and run for a spot on the parish council. Legal concerns are addressed in Highclere, the county seat. A bailiff maintains order and is appointed by the county.

Industry & Trade

Wool and lumber make up the vast majority of Ashbury's exports. The land isn't particularly fertile, and the hilly terrain makes the place unsuitable for farming. Recently, truffles became a high value commodity, and many people are trying to get into the truffle business. Nearly everything else in town must be imported, and Ashbury is highly reliant on the neighboring villages and county for materials and supplies.

Infrastructure

The Singing Hare Inn and Pickerton Arms are the only taverns in Ashbury. The Pickerton Arms is the usual stop for visitors and has more beds available than the Singing Hare. The latter is the preferred pub for locals and noted for quality food.   The Saint Caia Chapel was built by Brother Titus and has since expanded into the village's local church. It is currently overseen by Father Lars and Brother Ayland.

Guilds and Factions

All merchants in Ashbury belong to the Saint Cuent Guild which moderates prices within Highclere County as well as representing the business owners to the lord in Highclere. Though the guild can't elect a representative in the parish council, any merchants in the council are expected to represent the guild unofficially.

History

Ashbury was first settled in 5683 by sheep herders. Growth was slow, but steady. In 5800, Brother Titus built a small
