The Prometheans

When the Gods made the First Races they played with fire then in their infinite wisdom they gave it to us. Whoever said the Gods know what they're doing.
Thorbrith Oakfury in the introduction to his Short History of the War of the Three Faiths

Summary

When the First Gods created the world of Talor. They created all the races of the world. Seeing that their creations were faltering in the new world and seeing their world as faulty the Gods created a new world yet the same problems arose as the systems of the world faltered and failed.   Deciding to try a third and final time the Gods created Talor, at first the races flourished but soon the old problems came back. A small group of Gods reasoned that the problem could not be the world and so must be themselves, that their very presence changed the landscape and makeup of the Material Plane. These Gods, known as the Prometheans, advocated that the races of Talor be given technology and taught the ways of the Gods so that their creation may prosper without them.   Many of the others , the Old Ones, considered such ideas as dangerous fearing that to give their creations technology and independence from the Gods was to doom them to eternal oblivion. On the surface the Prometheans accepted the decisions of the Olds Ones yet began to teach the First Races in secret, bestowing their vast knowledge in Fire, Metallurgy and Agriculture. Over time the Races advanced quickly building the first cities.   Finally noticing the change the Old Ones mobilised to destroy these cities using fire from the heavens what the First Races would come to call Rakurai in later years.   Trying to prevent the slaughter of their creations the Prometheans placed their own bodies in the way of the fires from heaven, killing many and hardening the resolve of the survivors. Upon seeing the destruction of their kin many of the Old Ones switched sides beginning the War in Heaven.
