Nyrai the Smiling

Xerith of the Empire of Ilwyer Nyrai Auvian Gaei (a.k.a. The Smiling)

Nyrai the Smiling is the second emperor (or Xerith) of the Empire of Ilwyer, or the Elven Empire. He came to power after the death of his grandfather, Auvian the Immortal.   He is the son of Auvia, Auvian's only child, who died in childbirth. Despite being appointed to the rank of Xerith at the age of 127, he has taken naturally to power, if not to ruling. An arrogant, cruel and eternally smiling monarch, he thrives in the current climate of decadence, oppulence and extravagence which he has cultivated in the Empire, all the while persecuting and executing any who oppose him.   He is a resoundingly unpopular monarch, partially since the early years of his reign were characterised by an ever more defensive foreign policy and more and more territorial losses, including Curith becoming a vassal kingdom rather than a part of the Empire. His brutal treatment of his opponents and increasing mysogony and open sadism has earned him an additional hatred among his people, and he has become a bogeyman and subject of much disturbance among other peoples, especially among humans, for whom his reign has lasted longer than the collected lifetimes of many generations.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Though not frail, Nyrai does not cut a powerful figure. Even for an Elf, he is slim and unimposing, and his long, dark hair is not as striking as his grandfather's blonde.

Facial Features

Nyrai has inherited his grandfather's Aquiline nose, but otherwise barely resembles him, with a rounder face, dark eyes and a perpetual smirk.

Apparel & Accessories

While he bears the crown, sceptre and orb for official ceremonies, Nyrai's imperial regalia is vastly different to his grandfathers. He wears a long green tunic bearing the bronze falcon of the Xerith over a red downward chevron. He also carries a shortsword everywhere he goes.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Nyrai grew up in all the oppulence and wealth of the royal household, living in a variety of palaces and mostly cared for by the servants, wihout any contact with his grandfather and having very little contact with his father. He was avery demanding and rather cruel child, expecting his every whim to be cared for, and often indulging in torturing human slaves or animals.   He became Xerith at the young age of 127 years old, still in the middle of his education. Over the next twenty years, he ruled with the assistance of a series of advisors and regents, beginning with his father, Nyreas, before he assumed control himself, despite remaining under aged. He ruled much as he lived as a child, with cruelty and arrogance, and earned a reputation for always smiling, though his smile was considered more threatening than welcoming.   Over time, a culture of decadence, luxury and depravity pervaded the court, then the capital and then the rest of the arristocracy, driving the already-threatened Empire further into problems.

Education

Nyrai received a full formal education, though he did not serve in the military. It is also suspected that he may not be quite as qualified as he first appeared, since his tutors, just like all the servants he had, lived in abject fear of him.

Hi! For anyone who reads this, I'm JoustingJaguar, creator of this page. This is just me looking for a little feedback. So, to anyone who reads this, I have 3 questions:   1. Nyrai is inspired by Emperor Nero. Do you think Nero was worse or better than Nyrai?   2. Do you think Aelin's Betrayal resulted from or inspired the creation of the New Faith?   3. Do you think Nyrai will be able to restore his grandfather's empire?
