Hyerosian

Summary

Hyerosians are an anomaly, having abnormally pale skin for a race so often exposed to the sun. Oddly enough they do not burn easy, and seem to become somewhat refreshed in the sunlight. It is believed this may be a dilluted version of the Seltien's grounding ability that has been warped by interbreeding with sun-casters, with the light skin allowing sunlight to more easily pass through them without the need for the crystalline growth of the Seltien.

Physical Description

Hyerosians are tall, standing well above the other races of man. They are strong and agile, and make the greatest warriors. The Hyerosian people often share the philosophy of their Caster-God, Kilric, and are known as merciful yet stern warriors.

Psychological Description

The Hyerosian people are typically prone to long periods of thought and often meditate on the teachings of Kilric. However unlike many cultures that deal so often in the grim arts of war and care they are jovial and hopeful, choosing to see people as more inherently good then bad.

Cultural Basics

The Hyerosian culture is strong, having fared well after the Sethiri conflicts. The Hyerosian's are famed for their markets, and the nation of Hyeros hosts the the worlds largest markets, challenging the trade capabilities of the free states of Agral.   However the Hyerosians are known for more than just their traders. Many denizens of the northern kingdom are competent warriors, and none are more disciplined than the Knights of Discernment. The Knights of Discernment are an order of knights serving directly under the Godcaster Kilric. The Knights of Discernment are an order of warrior healers, spending most of their time advancing both the militant and civilian ideals of Kilric, weather it be healing the hurt, protecting the weak, redeeming the cruel, or slaying the unrepentant wicked. The culture of warrior healers stretches far past the Knights of Discernment, and the majority of warriors in Hyeros are capable healers, and most healers are just as familiar with combat. Although they are not forced to do so, the masses of Kilric's faithful (who make up the majority of Hyeros's populace) are strongly encouraged to practice the arts of healing and warfare.

History

During the first age the nation of Hyeros was apart of the former Tiorathan super-state of Sethir. Hyeros served as both a processing center for Seltien slaves and a retreat for wealthy Tiorathans. The city of Uodon (one of the nations major cities) was built as a hub for tourists and traders from Tiorath, and for a time hosted slave markets. However as Seltien from the vassal state of Melnir began to mingle with the early settlers of north Hyeros and half-Seltien residents began to become more common such markets quickly fell into disfavor.   In the year 581 of the first age, the Hyerosian governors banned the public sale of slaves and the large scale enslavement of Seltin within the nation, and made an attempt to totally ban slavery across the nation (a move that was vetoed by their masters within the Tiorathan Hierarchy). The Identity of Hyeros began to emerge long before those of the other Sethiri states. The Hyerosians were the the first human state to abandon total feudalism, and as early as the mid first age governors were commonly selected from the independently wealthy as often as they were from nobility.   With the near total collapse of the Tiorathan at the onset of second age, rebel groups within the states of Sethir saw their opportunity to sieze control of the former Tiorathan territories. The rebel forces clashed with Tiorath beginning in the forth year of the second age, with attacks on Tiorathan footholds gaining in frequency within the first for years without gaining significant ground until the young godlings who would become the Godcasters entered Sethir in the 8th year of the second age.   Kilric in particularly quickly ingratiated himself with his chosen people, those of Hyeros, and quickly became seen as a sort of defacto king. With the help of Kilric, the rebels alongside newly rallied armies of Hyeros were able to drive back Tiorathan forces from much of Hyeros, and install an independent governing body. The new government was (and still technically is) a hybrid between a monarchy and democracy, with elected governors collectively matching the kings power.   In the closing years of the six decade war the forces of Tiorath were driven totally from Hyeros with the taking of Uodon, and it was this embarrassing defeat that forced Tiorath to treat with the Sethiri states and sign the Gateway Pact. Kilric lead the negotiations on behalf of the Hyerosians (though the elected governors were present), and was instrumental in the wording used in the contract. After the signing of the contract Kilric largely stepped down from his role as the nations leader (although still officially wielding the same powers as king) and chose primarily to act as a teacher and protector without meddling in the democratic system of his people.

Advanced Physiology

Diet Due to the majority of Hyeros's borders sitting on it's beaches, Seafood is often consumed across the nation.   Miscellaneous The people of Hyeros seem healthiest in the sunlight, and many believe their light skin allows them to better absorb sunlight. It is believed that interbreeding between the Suncasters and Seltien led to this trait, which some scholars call sun-grounding.
