Fortressia

The human capital, seaside home of the Emberhand dynasty, the largest and most well-guarded city in Talica. Fortressia is the place where people of every background meet, even if they don't necessarily get along.

Demographics

Anyone can live in Fortressia. Humans are, obviously, the large majority, followed by goblins and then by minotaurs. Orcs are a growing minority, and elves and kral are still rarely seen.

Government

The Emperor is allegedly in charge of the city and the whole empire. He does, however, possess a council that can overrule his decisions if they feel brave enough, as well as act independently on minor affairs. Taxes and laws are enforced by the considerable military force of the empire, but their presence alone is usually enough to make any action completely unnecessary.

Defences

The ever-expanding walls of Fortressia are unyielding, and are yet to succumb to any attack. The two large iron gates require four men on top of the wall to rotate an engine to be opened. The upper half of the stone wall is hollow, and crossbowmen can fire freely upon approaching enemies in case of an invasion. On top, patrols are permitted to use scorpions and oil in case of any hostility.   An invasion by sea is equally unlikely. Not only is the imperial fleet stationed in Fortressia, but the harbor is equipped with several large scorpions to repel any unwelcome ships.   If an enemy force were to somehow get inside, the several castles in Fortressia could garrison the populace and offer vantage points in the central part of the city, where everything worth plundering is.   The corners of the city are punctuated by ancient, enchanted towers meant to defend it against dragons and less common foes, although they have fallen in disuse recently.

Industry & Trade

Fortressia is Talica's center of trade, welcoming ships from every corner of the world and every race. It sells weapons, fish and many of its crops in exchange for silks, meat, exotic animals and whatever those damn goblins have invented this time.

Infrastructure

Fortressia has the largest shipyard in the world, as well as a large number of castles within itself. A wide road trespasses the city latitudinally, leading visitors directly to the large plaza where most of the city's commerce takes place. There are also smiths in abundance, mercenaries who hire their services, and farmers outside the walls who often hire their services.

Assets

Fortressia acquires goods from all over the known world through commerce and taxation. While the most exotic goods often come in the shape of mobile merchants, the city boasts a steady, local supply of weapons, armors and fish.

Guilds and Factions

Being the capital city, it is mandatory that the Legion coexists with the Fortressian population, particularly its City Watch half. Several noble families take residence in the city and invest in it, notably the Perpetums and the Tridentslams. The Dragonslayers pose as the city's most renowned warriors, Naksi's hunting clan might be the only resident faction that systematically brings in meat and skins for the city and the Holy Servants take it upon themselves to dehereticize the city whenever possible. The Lightbringers also exist, although you can hardly notice nowadays.

History

Fortressia was founded by Tiberius I when he united orcs, humans and elves. Its construction marked the beginning of the reconquest of Talica north and eastwards, since the abyssians were never able to conquer the city.   Granted, he called it the Fortress, much like he called the Legion the Legion, but people soon realized that for all his greatness, Tiberius was not good at names, and renamed the city to Fortressia.

Architecture

Fortressia's upper class generally style their houses with pale marble walls. The military buildings use a mix of granite and pinewood, much like middling class citizens use for their houses. The poorer half of the populace, at the edges of the city, resort mainly to whatever wood they can find, and their buildings are often untaxable because they can hardly be called such a thing.

Geography

Fortressia is a seaside city at the end of the Sunbliss Plains, without a single mountain nearby. Its salty water teems with mostly inoccuous, colorful creatures. While the shoreline is indeed beautiful, few things compare to the sight of its ivory-colored buildings on a sunny afternoon, which is a fairly usual state of weather in the region.

Natural Resources

The fields around Fortressia are fertile and used to grow all sorts of crops. Most of the moving things in the sea can, at the very least, serve as a delicacy, if not a full course. At its bottom, jewels can be dug out by enterprising divers. Due to the heavy reliance of the city in navigation, some of the nearby fields are used to grow trees instead of crops, and the consumption of wood never dwindles.
