Dragonslayers

"They should be called Everythingslayers at this point..."
Ailise Tridentslam
The Dragonslayers are a neutral faction of warriors that are renowned for taking any job as long as it pays well. They were initially funded by the crown, in order to keep dragons at bay when they were more numerous, but their rampant growth made expenses impossible, until the throne decided to force them to earn their own salary.   Occasionally, if you are lucky, you can get them to do a job cheaply if you can somehow make them believe they will have fun. The recipe for Dragonslayer fun usually involves alcohol, violence, destruction and other equally elegant ingredients.

Structure

While Dragonslayers are generally considered ungovernable, they usually listen to the oldest members of their guild. Anyone that makes it to old age in such a profession is bound to have worthwhile advice, right?

History

"One day, dragons stopped being such a nuisance, and they panicked because they still needed a job. That was when they realized they could also kill other things for a living."
Aedr Dragonscream, talking about his early predecessors
Dragonslayers were founded before the Emberhand Empire was born. Their job was simple; they'd kill dragons that threatened the eastern villages and the human kings would pay them well for it.   What the kings did not foresee, however, was how immensely popular the faction would become. Soon the Dragonslayers would have so many additions to their ranks that the crown could not afford to pay them all, even after several suicide missions to cull their ranks. Economically desperate and with the dragon plague majorly dealt with, the government cut its ties with the Dragonslayers, forcing them to seek their own fortune.   That was when the Dragonslayers became more accessible. Few people could afford to order the death of a dragon, but many could pay for a bodyguard or someone to kill a few bandits. They stopped being dragon hunters and became regular sell-swords, losing enough popularity and members to finally achieve economic balance and job availability.
