Session 38 Recap: "Second Chances"
General Summary
In the heart of the volcanic caldera, Fortune's Favored found themselves face-to-face with the last obstacle separating them from claiming the Wellspring that had been stolen from Darrowshore during their first chaotic night together. Protected behind a magical barrier, Leorin Duskshadow taunted the party and made full use of his advantage as the group split to dismantle the barrier all the while dealing with the abashai standing in their way. True to his word, Leorin pulled no punches as he worked to lock down Last Leaf, and seemed to have a particular grudge against Deej, while distorting the narrow battlefield with gravity based magics.
Eventually, the group managed to destroy the final gem powering his barrier, but rather than celebrate their momentary victory, Leorin tapped into the Wellspring's boundless magics and ripped the section of mountain into the very skies in a display of raw power and control. Feeling the strain of so many battles one after the other, and not the Wellspring empowered mage still before them with the very sky cracking to pieces over their heads, Yvonne made a desperate break for the Wellspring itself and managed to connect with it, wrenching control of the artifact away from Leorin. The surge of power allowed her to twist the odds back into the party's favor with the Mythic Resonance Spell, Stormcaller's Dominion. The entire party seized the opportunity to strike and systematically pressed Leorin into a corner. At times, it started to seem as if he was arguing with himself in the heat of the battle, only for Xerren to inadvertently discover that a spirit seemed to be contained within the blade Leorin carried with him.
As fewer and fewer of Leorin's attacks seemed to connect, he shifted his forcus to try and break Yvonne's concentration, but to no avail. With the party closing in around him, he was finally knocked from the sky and started to fall limp to the ground below. Yvonne managed to catch him before his body dropped too far, and Xerren caught the sword, confirming the presence within it, before the lack of magic keeping the mountaintop in the sky started to fail. The party made a hasty retreat with the extra weight in tow, and landed a short distance away from the decimated Fane.
The posessed weapon expressed her gratitude for the party's willingness to save both of them, and the spirit introduced herself as Kailea, Leorin's wife, and that he'd sealed her spirit within the sword to save her from her final fate several hundered years before. Leorin too, explained some of the reason behind his participation with the Silent Dark, and expressed his own feelings of confusion at the fact he was still alive. Despite the desicion being hers, Yvonne too had mixed feelings about being truly face-to-face with her long-time tomentor and teacher without the tension of hostility between them. It wasn't exactly forgiveness she opted for in the end but something close to it, as the party made their way back to the relative shelter of Vraath Keep for a well-deserved night's rest.
In the morning, the party was woken by the casting of a Wish Spell, and found Leorin standing alongside the newly ressurrected form of his wife who at last could offer her own heartfelt thanks for the party's willingness to allow them to have a second-chance before they were whisked away by a teleportation spell back to Crimsonwich, the Silent Dark vanquished and behind them, and the next leg of their journey stretched out before them...
