Session 37 Recap: "Last One Standing"
General Summary
Fortune's Favored had no sooner set foot within the carved stone halls of the Silent Dark when the fanged statues lurched to life and attacked the intruding party. The moment's warning was all the group needed in order to avoid the surprise attack and reduce their attackers to piles of rubble. It quickly became obvious that the corridors were not quite as deserted as they might like, and the realization that the Fane would become a test of endurance meant to wear them down a bit at a time.
Armed with that knowledge, the group moved silently, carefully checking each door and corner for any further unpleasant surprises until the sound of humming and the smell of something cooking wafted through the otherwise quiet corridors. Curious, the group peeked through the door to spot an elf working steadily over a large cauldron bubbling away in the far corner of the room. Surprised by her relatively normal demeanor compared to their expectations of any member of the Black Hand forces, the group tried to cautiously approach her with the bluff that they were all new recruits of the Silent Dark in order to assertain her real identity. She claimed to be a member of the Tiri Kitor, kidnapped by the Silent Dark and put to work serving the forces of the Black Hand. However, both sides began to suspect something was off, as Yvonne took Trellara's form and stepped into the room, only for the woman to not recognize the notable figurehead of the druids at all.
Cover blown, the woman revealed herself to be a hag and waved a hand to call forth a number of devils all hiding in the room under the cover of invisibility as tensions rose to a boiling point. Though before a fight could break out between the two groups, Yvonne altered her disguise to appear as her old master and convinced the hag to flee the stronghold with her minions instead of fighting the party. The group found a disconcerting number of insects all leading deeper into the stronghold, but little else aside from an outdated map in the "war room".
They followed the trail down into a temple that appeared to be dedicated to Othiniel, where a force of hobgoblins, Greenspawn Razorfiends, and Yanna stood waiting to intercept the party. The Silent Dark's master of insects mockingly offered Fortune's Favored a chance to covert themselves to Othiniel's worship, one they quickly denied, before the two sides clashed. It quickly became apparent, that even though this was a final stand for the Silent Dark's forces, they would not be put down so easily. Yanna proved to be a difficult target, and her mastery of insects whittled away at the party's defenses while the Grenspawn Razorfiends, supported by the hobgoblins, created a formitable strike force that divided the party's attention and resources. It was only the timely intervention of healing that prevented some members of the group from succumbing to Yanna's attacks, and the discovery of the Insect Queen's weakness that felled her and the remainder of her forces at last.
A dragon, Yanna, her minions, and the Fane of the Silent Dark behind them and no time for a proper rest with the looming threat of the Divine Gate's shattering, Fortune's Favored marshalled the last reserves of their strength and stamina and pushed into the Wellspring Chamber where Leorin Duskshadow himself waited as one last test to see just how far Fortune's Favored had come...
