Session 21 Recap: "Face to Face"
General Summary
With a chance to breathe and nurse their wounds, Fortune's Favored continued to plan and wait for their ultimate quarry within the ruined building that served as the dragon's lair. With a plan in place to keep the dragon grounded and perhaps remove whatever magical bindings kept the dragons subservient to the whims of the Silent Dark.
It wasn't long the party had to lay in wait for the return of their targets, though the two were a fair bit more perceptive to the odd state of the lair than the party had hoped. Despite an attempt to smooth over the situation, the dragon roared to alert the swamp of the intruders in its lair and the party jumped into action to put their plan into motion. Xerren quickly suspended the dragon in time to prevent it from taking back to the air, while Leaf psionically hoisted the party one by one onto the roof to begin chaining the dragon down. Vigo and Verna managed to get most of the shackles on by the time Seraphina Shadowveil fired a crossbow bolt with a fireball spell affixed to it and broke the stasis, allowing the dragon Regiriax to attempt to take to the skies. However, with the chains shackling him, there was only so far the dragon could go, allowing Verna to get on his back to try and wrench the collar away following a dispel magic. Freed of the influence of the collar, Regiriax fell back to the roof, and the party turned their collective attention to Seraphina, who quickly surrendered rather than face the entire group.
With Seraphina subdued, Regiriax recovered enough to demand his summoned forces to retreat back to their posts, though nearly killed Seraphina then and there as the situation was explained to him. The party managed to convince him to allow her to live for the moment, and Regiriax took flight and vanished into the night sky. Alone with the source of the Black Fens strife, the party began to interrogate her for more information on the movements of the Silent Dark, its leaders, and the whereabouts of the other dragons in their employ. Despite her situation, Seraphina was largely unrepentant for her role in the unfolding conflict, informing the party she didn't so much buy into the philosophy, but rather was happy enough to do as she had been paid to do, though after this it was likely the Silent Dark would kill her for giving away such information to the party. Yvonne, unwilling to allow her the possibility of freedom after her actions, took it upon herself to kill Seraphina, though not before the woman informed her that the conflict in Edenia was geared into refining her into a tool to shatter the Divine Gate for the Silent Dark.
Mission accomplished, the party began the journey back to the Tiri Kitor, but came across a woman making camp in the swamp near where the Fortune's Favored planned to rest for the night. Though innocuous at first as she invited them to join her meal and fire, it became obvious she knew far more about the party than any random traveler ought to. She quickly revealed herself as Tysphone, the leader of the Silent Dark and Firstborn of Othiniel. Though more of a projection than a physical being in the moment, she happily answered the party's questions and informed them of her reasons for her mission. That the world had become too damaged and ruined to save when it had once been a paradise of perfection, and she intended to return it to that state by force, before fading away into the night and leaving the group to ponder the weight of her words...
