Corcyra (cor-SEER-ah)

The port town of Corcyra in Cupros would be one of the significant seaports of southern Bresas by its location alone, but its importance has been magnified over the centuries after its selection as the seat of the Church of the Starsea.

Following its founding in the 30th century PFY, the Church was initially slow to spread, and was largely confined to eastern Imora for the first thousand or so years of its existence. Its first major foothold in western Imora was in Casca Ostrum, the colony of the Acrean Empire that would later become @Ostrony. When Acrea fell and Ostrony came into its own power as an independent city-state, the Church remained a foundation of its culture, and a proselytization effort began in earnest targeting the eastern regions of Bresas by the end of the ninth century PFY. Unfortunately for the Church's missionaries, this coincided with the spread of the Ninefold Fane northward from the Aalus region, and the Church found little fertile ground in a continent now already plunged into religious turmoil - save in the relatively sheltered region south of Aalus along the coast.

Corcyra, itself a former satrapy of Acrea in centuries past, was already a cosmopolitan port engaged in regular trade with Xeqla to the east and the Etran nations to the south, and Ostronians found it a welcoming haven. After centuries of exposure to a multitude of practices and traditions, neither the Green Faith nor the remnants of the old Acrean religion held much sway in Cupros, and the Starsean doctrine - with its pelagic elements and its fatalism - held more than a little appeal to a region highly influenced by the sea.

The Church enjoyed a great deal of success once it established a cathedral in Corcyra, spreading successfully to Ilan, Pelea, Qortas, and the Etran nation of Faaea. Corcyra's bishopry was soon a major hub of the faith and a cornerstone of Church relations. At the Consortium held in Ostrony in 765 PFY, the decision was officially made in a three to one vote to locate the seat of the Church and its Archbishop to Corcyra.

Today, Corcyra remains a thriving seaport and a vital nexus of Starsean Church culture. While Ostrony is still the largest city to call the Church its official religion, Corcyra, despite its more modest size, wields considerable power in the Starsean majority nations, and the word of the Archbishop can sway events halfway around the world. The Great Cathedral - rebuilt and expanded over the centuries - is a site of theological study and pilgrimage for Starsea devotees and scholars on three continents. Even as the Church's doctrine has slowly adapted over time, Corcyra is a fixed point in its web of influence, and remains the one place that, should it wish, might persuade great and ancient Ostrony to bend the knee.
