The Black Talon Organization in Tales of Cevantia | World Anvil

The Black Talon

The Sharpest Tools

An assassins/thieves guild which has risen quickly to fame due to its less than scrupulous attitude towards accepting jobs. Although they will never admit to any illegal dealings and will quickly deny any wrongdoing, many Black Talon employees have been linked to misdeeds. is a very well established secret organization consisting of thieves, fences, assassins, saboteurs, spies, and smugglers. Believed to be based largely in and under Moonmere through a network of subterranean tunnels, they reportedly have ran smaller outfits in Te'Reale, Tottenburg, and Lowick and a few more smaller outfits in various towns. However, their presence has been noticed all over the world of Cevantia, with many reports of members being seen leagues away from Moonmere. Members are branded with the guild’s symbol on their shoulder blades signifying allegiance and commitment.     The Black Talons operate like a business-minded crime family, celebrating loyalty and truth to one’s word over most other merits. A member pays their debts, keeps their promises, and always seeks opportunities for the betterment of the Talons. Leaders of a Talons sect are titled First Talon, and they oversee assigned elements of the organization’s functions. First Talons hold equal power within a sect, and there is always an odd number acting within that location to break any disagreements over business ventures and actions.

Structure

The Black Talon were commanded by The Triumvirate. The Talons were divided in groups of five, called Hands, each one under command of a leader called the First Talon who could contact The Triumvirate when needed. In the field, the First Talon of a Hand was only outranked by The Triumvirate. Hands were trained to work as a unit, which can be a great strength when everyone is of one mind, but a great weakness if not executed properly.
The Black Talon abided by rules of conduct acknowledged in the wider world of thieves and assassins, including payment upon completion of contract. The organization was accused several times of being corrupt, with several of its members putting personal wealth and power as a priority over the interests they represented

Public Agenda

While the immediate assumption is that the Black Talon is merely interested in profit at any cost (and that is a merit of the Talons), they also wish to preserve the function and prosperity of civilization. It is well known that a thriving city is a profitable one, and an enemy of civilization is a foe of the Talons. They largely consider themselves a necessary dark underbelly, willing to do the under-the-table deeds that the wealthy and powerful cannot commit with their own hands.
The Black Talon also understands that conflict breeds a healthy economy, and has occasionally kindled the flames of unrest to keep things tense and profitable. There is also virtue in a distracted administration being easy to manipulate. Were it not for the branch of the Black Talons in Moonmere, Nalorians initial attack would likely have forever destroyed its culture.
