6th-level Spell: Well of Souls

Whispering (Evocation)

A swirling whirlpool of rippling, ethereal light undulates outward in a 30-foot-radius, 5-foot-tall cylinder centered on a point that you can see within range. The whirlpool spreads around corners, with the area becoming difficult terrain for the duration as the boundaries between the Spiritual and Physical Realms become blurred. The ghostly well shimmers softly, emitting dim light out to 30 feet.

On your turn when the well appears and on each of your turns thereafter, you can use a bonus action to cause the well to pulse brightly. Three spirits emerge and immediately begin to attack creatures of your choice within 60 feet of the well. Each spirit can take the form of a bear, an eagle, or a wolf (your choice). Make a melee spell attack for each spirit using your spellcasting modifier. On a hit, the target takes 3d8 necrotic damage as the spirits attack using spectral claws, talons, and fangs. Creatures within the well that take damage from the spirits additionally cannot regain hit points until the end of their turn. If you cause two spirits to attack the same creature, you can choose to sacrifice one of the spirits to gain advantage on the attack roll.

Each turn spent sending out spirits drains the well, causing the dim light to shrink by 5 feet each turn spent doing so. Once the well's dim light reaches 0, the well fades away, and the spell ends.

  • At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, you can send out an additional spirit per turn.
