Washington D.C. Settlement in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. has been the seat of the American government since 1790. Already an urban sprawl encompassing a large portion of Maryland and Virginia, the city has only increased in size and as the seat of power since. As magic began to return to the world the city took on several new nuances. There was not room for the new Departments and Lobbyists in the already bloated city. Wanting to make an impact they built bridges over the river and buildings over the bridges. The bridges still allow for boat traffic and auto traffic; however they are high rises above all of that. Rather than appear like the existing monuments and buildings, this new series of towers is instead sleek, rounded, and in a series of colors. The tower for magecraft is a deep blue with sparkling stars that travel across its surface. The tower for transformed beings appears to have various textures like scales, fur and feathers. The tower for intelligent species appears to be made from the elements with what appears to be flowing water topped by hewn rock, then billowing clouds topped with a blazing inferno. That was quite controversial when it was first created but with some negotiation the flames were morphed from standard reds to greens in order to appease the firefighters. The design is explained by the fact that intelligent species can be found in any element. To be clear it is not just magical species either as they also represent dolphins, parrots, elephants, and other species who have now been determined to be of a level 6 or higher intelligence.   These new departments were formed quickly and have needed to evolve as the world's understanding of magic and its uses have evolved. Originally founded in research, most have moved on to governing and advocacy. Some forms of magic require physical resources or components, while others do not but all have a need for some form of public support. While most embrace it after decades of exposure there are still those who fear it enough to threaten magic users and those who want to hunt intelligent magical creatures for the thrill of it.
