Unicorns Species in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Unicorns

Unicorns flowed back into the world, relatively unnoticed. This was because many believed that Unicorns were going to come back from Horses. They were also not officially recorded as Unicorns until after a thorough investigation was completed by both farming officials, and the Textile industry. Even now there have been aggressive stances taken by those who profit off of the Unicorn is a Horse stance, to invalidate the True Unicorn's recognition.
The Unicorn itself is a beautiful subspecies of goat, that show a greater size and magical affinity than done might think. They have been shown in a variety of Farm shows, State Fairs, and even a few News Stations, after their return. This has led to people seeing them and appreciating their grace, elegence, and charm.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Unicorn looks and behaves like a goat. There are a few Morphological differences though. Unicorns grow one singular horn from the crest of their forhead, females usually have longer horns than the males, and the Males have lost the headbutting for dominence behaviour. Their legs are slightly longer, making the animals taller, and their ears are elongeted as well with little tufts of fur at the end. Their tails are longer and more whip like than a regular goat. And they all tend to grow long tufts of fir from under their chins.

Additional Information

Domestication

The Unicorn began showing up as an otherwise healthy mutation of Kashmir Cashmere goat. Therefore it is domesticated, and it was born that way from the time of its re-emergence into the world. However it has been seen living in the wild, behaving as though it will not trust humans. So there may be a process for bringing it from wild to domesticity, that has not been found yet.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The main use of Unicorns is Cashmere. This is used in a number of Textile products, and is how the Unicorn Sub species was discovered. Alternate products or uses from Unicorns is; fertilizer, meat, leather, milk, yogurt, cheese, and magical land development.

Facial characteristics

Unicorns, have faces that are very similar to goats. Wide set eyes, a muzzle, pink nose, and a pair of rounded ears. Where Unicorns differ is in their Horn. Instead of two, Unicorns have a single horn, sprouting from their forehead and curving up.

Average Intelligence

Much like Goats, the Unicorns that have been raised in captivity have little fear of humans. Unicorns do tend to be slightly smarter than your average goat; going to fetch a farmhand if a member of the herd got hurt, being calm for shearing or hygiene routines, and many other indicators.
Wild Unicorns are often just as smart as farm Unicorns, but much more skittish. They behave like Deer if they are found in the wild, but like the older stories said young innocent children they will trust to help them.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Through research of the animal, after they were determined to be an variant of goat altogether, showed that they had some sort of sense that led them to more magically active areas to graze. It was determined after a lot of observational study that it was their horns, that acted as dowsing rods toward magic. With further study it was learned that the Horn acts as a magical sensor, much like how a shark can see electric fields.
