Long Distance Couriers Profession in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Long Distance Couriers

Within The Rookery, an organization whose purpose is to deliver items from the mundane to the magical from point A to point B with expediency, there is a delivery sub-class called Long Distance Couriers. While most deliveries happen within a few hours and are either local or within a two hundred and fifty mile radius of the point of origin, some delivery requests may be of a longer distance. For any delivery over two hundred and fifty miles, a Long Distance Courier is contracted to fill the request.   Long Distance Couriers generally fall into the class of winger which have larger 'soaring' wings. This might be similar to an albatross for example. This wing style makes them ideal for long distance deliveries. These deliveries can include original signed legal documents, magical items, fragile items requiring extra care, pets, etc. Whatever the customer feels is worth the delivery fee, and can be fit into the delivery bag will be carefully transported from the origin to the destination.   Even within this class most are qualified only for work within their own continent. Only a small percent of those qualify for overseas work, and by that we mean work that literally has them flying across seas and oceans. These individuals must obtain even more qualifications than the basic Long Distance Courier. While they do have modern technologies like GPS, and satellite phones, they are also required to pass strict geography tests yearly, and learn to navigate by the stars [also tested yearly]. They have to pass psychological testing yearly as well to ensure that they can withstand the isolation required without unwelcome side-effects. This is a high paying job as is to be expected from employment that asks so much. Within The Rookery those who achieve this position can retire within 10 years.
