Cursed Objects Item in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Cursed Objects

Cursed Objects are a classification of everyday/personal items imbued with dark intent. Dark is a spectrum though, and therefore Cursed objects have different levels of classifications. The Classification system goes from I to V, [1-5] although the public only knows up to 4.

Classification system

Class I

Class I objects are objects filled with petty feelings. These objects are often more of an annoyance than an actual problem to people. These objects can often be repurposed into helpful or even useful objects. An example of a Class I object is a teaspoon bought and given to a coworker with a false sense of sweetness, which will turn sugars into salt. Most of the time these objects are re-sold, with a notation on their curse, at certified dealers. Many even consider Class I objects to be familial heirlooms.

Class II

Class II objects can either have absorbed strong negative feelings through prolonged negative contact, extreme emotion, or they can be actively cursed! An example of a class II item could be something like a backpack worn every day by a child who was bullied. Each negative event created worse and worse feelings in the bullied child resulting in a backpack that was one day able to fight back for its wearer. Unfortunately, the backpack was reacting to the owner's feelings and the beating it dealt out was not always warranted. While this might prove useful in certain situations, it would definitely create problems if a vindictive owner were to possess it. Class II objects are researched by certified dealers and if one wishes to possess one, then one must go through a certification and matching process. These are controlled objects.

Class III

Class III objects are objects that have been subjected to or surrounded by negative emotions for so long that they themselves begin to generate a negative field. These objects sometimes start out as an actively cursed object, that then has the energy of a Class II cursed object infuse them. An example of an object of this Class would be a wedding ring of an abused, belittled, and cheated on Spouse, that upon their leaving was left behind in the Abusers home. The anger and negativity of the 'abandoned' Abuser, further corrupted the ring until it was able to manifest its curse. Its ability was a 'ghost' who tormented, beat, and drove mad any who lived in its vicinity. Class III objects are never up for auction, and never to be possessed. These objects are either cleansed, with vigorous and numerous rituals or magically siphoned. They are stored in the Warehouse.

Class IV

Class IV objects are objects which are both actively cursed and have been exposed to negative energy for a prolonged period of time. A modern example would be the hatchet used in the famous murders at the Borden house. While it is true that Lizzie did some of the killings that occurred there, it is also true that the hatchet was cursed. When Lizzie's mother Sarah died, and her father Andrew remarried, her mother's brother John was furious. When Andrew began gifting family property to the new wife's family, John began a hunt for a cursed item. He found the hatchet after a few years of exhausting searches. It had been initially cursed by a Native American Shaman as his last dying act as it was being stolen by a military officer who had just destroyed the Native American village. While it is true that there was little magic in the world, for a sacrifice like this, and with the old knowledge still intact, it was enough to create a powerful curse. John held the hatchet and pondered his revenge for months prior to finding the right time to use it. John carefully brought the hatchet into the Borden house and left it in his guest room on the bed as he left to set his alibi. Poor Lizzie went to move the hatchet as she tidied his room, and was struck by both the curse and John's negative energy. Her own anger with Andrew's actions and her own hatred toward her stepmother further imbued the hatchet with negative energy. Years later we all still remember the slaughter that ensued. These objects are cleansed, and they are magically siphoned on a regular basis as the energy, if left alone, will grow again. They can never fully be decontaminated. Even destruction will not destroy the energy they have absorbed, it will only displace it into a new item which may then remain undiscovered. These items are housed in the Warehouse with special caretakers and regular maintenance.

Class V

Class V objects are considered Armageddon class. If they were to be used they would result in massive destruction. The range for these items can be anything from a city to the entire world. While these items are incredibly rare, they do exist. We are not sure at this time how many there are. These items are dealt with by removing them to an isolated location by mutual world power consent. They are magically warded and teleported by the Magic Counsel into the Vault, a special magical construct on the dark side of the moon. It is built, we hope, in such a way that these items do not have contact with one another, and so that any magic would be released away from the Earth. Little is known about these objects as they are not the subject of study. These items are not to be transported by The Rookery.
