Archimedes Pherin Character in Tales from the Rookery | World Anvil

Archimedes Pherin

Archimedes Pherin has been around since at least 287 B.C.. During that time he was well known as a mathematician, scientist, philosopher, astronomy, engineering, etc. He will tell you it was easy to be knowledgeable back then simply because not much was known or recorded yet.   The truth is that none really know how old Archimedes is, including himself. He was not born in 287 B.C. as was speculated. He was born long before then to a poor family in Greece who were scraping out a living. He will tell you that he had a very happy childhood until his family was killed by soldiers and he was taken as a slave. At first that was a very difficult time for him, but he was supremely lucky, if you can call it that, that the slave master recognized how intelligent he was. He began, after his regular work, learning to calculate numbers. The slave master was hoping to groom him into someone who could be used to help hide illicit dealings from the masters. He instead learned enough to turn the tables on the slave master and started helping other slaves to freedom. When the treachery of the 'slave master' was discovered, Archimedes was assigned to be slave master instead. He was able to enact overall improvements to the lives of the slaves, and he was also able to learn to read and write, very rare skills at the time.   When he turned 40, Archimedes was freed. You might consider this to be a good thing, and I suppose if being allowed to live is good, it was. He was turned out of the household and his position with nothing and essentially chased from the property. He was granted this 'courtesy' by his master for a lifetime of service. Most slaves never lived to this age and if they did were simply killed. He had nothing; however, and he was far too old to find another position in the city even though he could read and write. Everyone there knew he had been a slave and how old he was.   He took the opportunity to make his way to a city within another region, one he new his masters had never visited and there, with forged letters of recommendation, he began work as a scribe. He was able to remain there for a number of years, but after two decades it became obvious, even to him, that he had stopped aging. He laid the foundation for a new life in another city even further away and started again. He has continued in that way until today.   After all this time, Archimedes prefers to live isolated in the back woods of Canada. Access to satellite internet allows him to keep up to date on the latest in research and his vast fortunes, amassed over many lifetimes, allow him to continue his research. He now purses an interested in magic, a new frontier.
