Airships Vehicle in Tales from the Peppermint Twist | World Anvil

Airships

Airships or lighter-than-air aircraft have been in use for decades. Either non-rigid, semi-rigid or rigid and lifted by helium and or hot air. They are often used where a conventional aircraft cannot be used. Particularly where the ability to hover and loiter is needed. Advertising, tourism and film most often.    Some larger airships have been fitted out to carry cargo across long distances. When there is not a time constraint or the destination lacks proper air travel infrastructure such as airport facilities for fixed wing aircraft. Airships also have lower operational costs.    Advertising airships are an ever seen site within the cities of 2085. Smaller designs broadcasting annoying commercials for any product you might need. More often than not tailored specifically for you and delivered via your personal communication devices. These are often targets for gangs and hooligans, either to simply vandalize or to steal any valuable parts.   Tourism airships carry paying passengers on site seeing excursions. Notably over Southern Germany to see the castles and Alps. Some airships are outfitted as a dining experience to eat in the clouds. At least when the clouds are not comprised of toxic materials or acid rain. There is a niche market for seeing old time cinema projected on a cloud while being served drinks and food.   Corporate airships are often used to conduct research and exploration for resource extraction. Also to supply remote sites and outposts with needed supplies and materials. Many of these sites are in Africa where there is no government or national entity to maintain control. Those few countries in Africa that remain as well as various warlords sometimes use an airship as a makeshift bombing platform, harkening back to the First World War.   There are several wealthy persons who have private airships and use them as a yacht. Having a means to travel at a leisurely pace yet not having to worry about ports and secondary travel should they have an inland destination.
