News: Vigil Departs Nigita

Nigita Public Informer - The Hub 18.Forn.35 ABY - If you were roused from your sleep this morning by the sound of large ships, you weren't the only one. Most of the citizens woke to the sound of the large constructor ships reappearing over Wardenclyffe, the Vigil's Starport west of the city. These ships began removing much of the modular facility, including two massive reactors from below the main landing platform. The Informer reached out to the Director of the facility for comment and were given this press release:

"It is with sadness that the board of directors of the Vigil Compact, Ltd. must announce the abandonment of the Nigita facility and system at this time. Continued and repeated actions by non-state actors have threatened the security of the colony to a point where our operations are jeopardized by threat of war. For nearly half a century, the Vigil Compact has operated in war zones under a banner of neutrality, first for the Republic, then the Empire, then the New Republic, and now under its own banner in the absence of any central government in the galaxy.

As part of our agreement with the Governor's office, we have turned over control to three squadrons of remanufactured BTL-S3 and BTL-A4 Y-Wing multirole fighters for continued use by the planetary defenses. In addition, rather than transport our remaining stock of hyperfuel, it will be pumped into the reserves of the Eastern Starport which should resume operations within the week. Similarly, prior to shutdown, our remaining reactor reserves will be transmitted into the city grid and storage system where capacity allows.

First and foremost, the Vigil is a refugee and medical relief service. While we regret that the situation has forced this decision, we believe in it. As Nigita is contested by diametric and opposing influences we cannot in good conscience try and remain neutral here. Rather than make a choice which could engage our forces in an undeclared war, especially yet another war of Force users, which has placed this Galaxy under the threat of annihilation continuously for almost a century, we must withdraw."

— Office of Director Lee Rambaud, Vigil.

We here at the Informer reached out to the Governor's office for comment, pressing the issue regarding having what was the last line of defense, including the city's shield, suddenly pulling up stakes. The governor sat down with us and explained very clearly:

"We cannot expect the leaders of a galactic operation such as theirs to anchor themselves to a single world. They provide aid to many and have committed to respond with similar relief efforts should Nigita need it. While I understand the decision, and have misgivings about it, I do not begrudge the Director carrying them out. It was her negotiation with their board that allows for much of the infrastructure, though unpowered, to remain behind. It gives us a leg up on restarting the gear once we secure new power systems and weapons cores.

Our shield will glow again. In the meantime they have left us pristinely maintained ships and a significant stockpile of resources. I am currently in negotiations with the Corporate Sector to supply additional capital ships to fly our own flag and defend us outside the effort of the Republic, or the Cartels.

You'll see, we'll build stronger, it's only a matter of time."

— Gov. Edward Hothden, Esq.

We hope that the Governor's optimism holds true. We, for certain, will sleep a little less soundly knowing that those planetary defense cannons are silent.
