General House Rules
- Secret Rolls. I may ask you what your Perception, Insight, and Investigation bonuses are for the purpose of rolling for you behind the screen in situations in which it makes sense for you not to know how well you did (I will do my best to not overuse this mechanic)
- Delaying. Aside from holding your action, you can delay your initiative (permanently move your turn to later in the order so you can take your whole turn - not just your action - after a condition is met/after someone else goes)
- Health Increases. You can take fixed health increases when you level up; if you choose to roll, you can re-roll 1s
- Inspiration.
- Players can have two inspirations at a time but you cannot use more than one inspiration on a given turn
- Players can nominate another player at the end of the session to receive an inspiration
- Things I don’t really care about:
- Alignment.
- Background Features.
- Encumbrance.
- Ammo.
- Rations/Food/Water (mostly).
- Somatic Components. If a character is wielding a weapon and/or shield that serves as a spell casting focus, holding that object counts towards both somatic and material components (I.e., you don’t need to have a hand free if you’re holding your focus, like a shield with a cleric/paladin’s holy symbol)
- Spell Duration. For convenience, spells with a duration of 8h instead last until the next long rest for convenience (except where this stretches belief)
- Feat Changes.
- Magic Initiate. The 1st level spell gained through this feat can be cast using spell slots earned through the “Spellcasting” or “Pact Magic” classes features
Character Creation Rule Deviations
- Sources. Pretty much anything in official WotC books is admissible, including custom lineage and alternate ability score bonuses, except for Acquisitions Incorporated, Spelljammer, and Eberon (so basically, sci-fi species and meme spells)
- Rolling. Rolling for stats is fine, just do it at the table
- Free Feat. All characters start with a free feat, ideally tied to their background or species (just try not to make it too “cheesy”, the intention here is to better allow players to make a fun, unique, and thematic character from a low level)
- Custom. I allow custom species and I not only allow but encourage custom backgrounds.
- Evil. If you want to play an evil character, please talk to me first so we can figure out how to integrate them.
- Intelligence Benefits. There are no consequences for negative intelligence modifiers. Rewards do not apply to temporary increases in intelligence.
Intelligence Modifier | Additional Languages/Tools | Additional Skills |
---|---|---|
+1 | 1 | 0 |
+2 | 2 | 1 |
+3 | 3 | 1 |
+4 | 4 | 2 |
+5 | 5 | 2 |
