Faelderin – The Fractured North

Faelderin, the northern half of Taladaran, is a realm defined by both triumph and tragedy. Long ago, these lands rose in rebellion against the southern Empire of the Sands, casting off their chains and forging their own kingdoms. For a time, Faelderin stood proud, its banners rivaling the empire’s power. Yet the unity that freed them did not endure. Rivalries festered, betrayals deepened, and wars of ambition reduced their hard-won dominion to ashes. Today, Faelderin is a mosaic of nations, each struggling to endure while wilderness and tyranny press against their borders.

At the very center lies the kingdom of Aul’Daran, a land that once bound the north and south together in strength. For centuries it was the gate through which armies and caravans passed, its walls high and its thrones proud. But during the Pale Wars sixty years ago, foul sorcery and plague turned the land into a blighted ruin. Fields became wastelands, rivers ran with corruption, and cities fell to ruin. Where once the greatest of northern kingdoms stood, now only a scar remains. Yet even in ruin, Aul’Daran remains pivotal, for its lands are the only broad passage between north and south. Whoever holds its husks commands the flow of war and trade.

To the east of Aul’Daran lies the Republic of Elaquwish, a realm of questing knights, civic councils, and ideals of freedom. It is bordered to the east by the Oporian Sea, and to the north by the Duchy of Garndson. Together, Garndson and Elaquwish form a bulwark of order and honor, though their rivalry often tests their alliance. To the northeast, along the northern shores of the Oporian Sea, lies the Kingdom of Oporian, a seafaring power whose fleets dominate northern waters. Their island cousins, the Empire of Ryn, rule from the southern seas, their navy a rival and sometimes ally to Oporian’s ambitions.

To the north of Aul’Daran lies the Shekiac Empire, a land bound in tyranny and infernal bargains. Shekiac’s rule is absolute, its legions disciplined and its courts steeped in cruelty. Beyond Shekiac to the north lies the Milakash Union, a vassal realm held tightly in Shekiac’s grasp, its autonomy little more than a name. To the west and southwest of Shekiac lie the Free Cities of Falcrish, once proud centers of commerce and independence. Yet even these bastions of liberty falter, many of them now controlled by the mercenary company known as the Iron Crown, Shekiac’s ruthless ally.

Westward, beyond the Ironpass Mountains, stands the Kingdom of Basaras. Once enslaved under vampiric lords, Basaras was freed and now flourishes beneath the benevolent rule of the mysterious Blind Queen. Though surrounded by rivals and wilderness, Basaras has grown into a beacon of hope, its borders touching both the Free Cities to the south and Shekiac to the east. Offshore, in the Star Sea, the Kingdom of Quelm sails its black-bannered ships. Quelm is a land of seafarers and privateers, feared as raiders yet courted as allies, their allegiance shifting with the tides. Their presence ensures that no merchant fleet sails the Star Sea without risk of ambush.

To the far west rise the Crayhorn Peaks and Greyhorn Mountains, beyond which lies the Duchy of Miraris. Once a vassal of Aul’Daran, Miraris declared independence after its master’s fall. Today it stands as a hardy frontier nation, its people carving life from harsh coasts and rugged mountains. Beyond Miraris lies the Far Coast, a frontier where civilization wanes, and wilderness swallows all but the most determined settlers. Beyond even this frontier, to the farthest west, steaming jungles rise against reason, lush and humid where logic demands frost. Whispers claim an ancient, corrupted kingdom lies within, plotting the undoing of all creation.

In the north, tundras, vast grasslands, and icy wastes stretch to the horizon. Nomadic tribes, monstrous warlords, and ancient spirits rule these wilds, bowing to no southern king. Faelderin is a land of contrasts: republics and tyrannies, hope and ruin, civilization and savagery. Fragile alliances and bitter rivalries ensure that its story is always changing. Here, kingdoms rise and fall within a generation, but so too are legends born. For those bold enough to shape it, Faelderin offers both doom and destiny in equal measure.
