Leander the Longfang friend Character in Tai'Sans Hearth | World Anvil

Leander the Longfang friend

Attention reader. You are about to read a restricted article from the library and may only be accessed by fully trained keepers or with a written permission slip by the High Keeper herself. It concerns the vitae of a known heretic, whose writings were deemed fraternising with the orcs of the mountains. Reading it without the proper education on the context may result in poorly formed frame of reference of the involved events.

Of Leander Losserei

My son always took after his mother. She came from the stormcoast and I suppose people from there need a certain untamedness to survive. I regret to this day I did not do more to keep him controlled, despite my pride that he resisted the fall to Markazz
— Leanders father, upon questioning when Leander left the Library a second time.
The individual known as Leander of the Losserei was born at the place were multiple tributaries flow together to form the river Losserei, just west of Damonion, to an elven (Mellhedhrén) father and a human mother. The father, a local important merchant, had recently been elevated to noble status, but had not married Leanders mother. Nonetheless, both mother and child were integrated into the household and Leander grew up in a wealthy home and when his talent for memory and logic became apparent he received a full set of tutors, setting him up for success later on.

Education

Leander from the Losserei. He was a pain in my side from the first lecture of mine he attended. I still recall some of his questions. He did not have the decorum or etiquette to know when to ask and when to listen. His only saving grace in my eyes was the fact that his questions were always professional, intelligent and polite. It is a shame how he turned out. I eventually could have seen him becoming a colleague of mine. He certainly had the potential.
— Aravin Dorn, First Reader in Grivin
After passing the entrance exams for the Great Library with flying colours, young Leander quickly rose to prominence among the students for his clever wit and unending curiosity. Some envied his abilities, but most were quickly won over by his joyful demeanor and willingness to help, teach and learn from his peers. Passing the educational hurdles in no time, the young halfelf went on to graduate as full keeper in fewer years than anyone in quite some time.
This exemplary performance earned him the attention of his superiors and he was awarded a royal stipend to fund his early career until he had made a name for himself. Young Leander eventually settled on a plan that would change the trajectory of his life forever.

First Expedition

Leander was brilliant from the moment I first met him. Always questioning, always curious. The stuff that makes a great keeper. I always knew it would drag him out into the world. I wish he was back already. There is so much I did not tell him in time.
— Iliana Riverview, Keeper in spe after Leanders first disappearance
When the time was right, Leander set out to seek new dig sites in the Razorcrest Mountains. There had been rumors at the time, of old remains of the days before Osylana, a time of legend only known in fragments from the memories of their Vasylanian cousins. With two guides and a helper, Leander set out to find the rumored ruins.   What he did not account for was the cruelty of the wilderness. In an unexpected avalanche his companions perished and Leander only survived barely, having broken his leg. It was then that by his own account, he met the Longfangs, an orcish tribe in the mountains, who found him at the edge of the debris field. They apparently took him in and treated his wounds. After several years, and being presumed dead by the Library, Leander reappeared, causing an uproar at the otherwise quiet institution.

Return to civilisation

The self-appointed "friend of the Longfangs". Cursed be his incessant bloodline. No matter what I do, I cannot get him to tow the line. His works could jeopardise this entire institution if they anger the wrong people. If only he would have stayed with his precious savages.
— Verina of Grivin, High Keeper, after Leanders first return.
But, despite his return to civilisation, something had changed within the young Keeper. He now openly argued against crown doctrine, which branded the orcs as the enemy. His published series of writings on orcs was accepted into the Library, as is law, but were quickly swept under the rug of bureaucracy, because of their socially explosive contents.
The heretical writings of Leander are, of course, kept in the library along with all written word. Below is an index of them. Be aware that it is the only one we will ever create.

Disappearance

Listen. I don't wish to talk about Leander anymore. I told you all I know, even matters no lady should ever be forced to disclose. He is gone, is that not what you wanted?
— Lady Iliana of Riverview, now matron of a high house
In the end, Leander turned out too changed to fit into Osylanian society. He refused to rescind his words and after several years of living an outcast among his peers, he disappeared a second time. This time for good. It is likely that he returned to the orcs, where he will likely have died by now. Halfelven live longer than pure humans, but not several centuries.

Ah, the fate of those who know two cultures and have to choose between them. If the librarians refuse to learn from Leander's experiences, their wilful ignorance benefits no-one.

If it helps you sleep better, their culture is long dead by now, so they did get the bill eventually ;)

I am cross on Leander's behalf! Stupid people not willing to think for themselves.

Well, if it makes you feel better, Leander got the last laugh. He lived out his days among friends and his former culture did eventually collapse (though not in his lifetime)

This was a lovely, albeit a bit bittersweet, story, and the quotes all complement it well!
