2024 Worldbuilding Awards - Tahuum Itaqiin

Greetings, fellow worldbuilders and writers!   I wouldn't be the first person to feel awkward about participating in a competition like the Worldbuilding Awards, to be sure. I can't help but feel there's something a bit hubristic in submitting anything for a best-of category given all the fantastic, eye-popping work there is to see here on World Anvil. That said, I've occasionally received warm compliments on the long-form articles I've put far, far too much time into. I like to think these articles, including the ones I've submitted for this year's contest, make Tahuum Itaqiin feel lived in even as they can be reminiscent of encyclopedia entries or history book chapters at times.   For the Hearts & Minds award:
Grape Wine, A Social History of
Tradition / Ritual | Mar 17, 2024
There wasn't another obvious category for a tradition article, so here it is. Some combination of fleshing out the Internecine Period last December and making mulled wine over the holidays got me thinking about all sorts of cultural traditions, inculding culinary ones, reflect histories of power (im)balances and conflict.   For the overall best article award:
The Ashen Hallows of Old Agratekt
Settlement | Dec 21, 2023
I loved writing this one. Well, of course I did, but really, fleshing out an ancient, now-defunct pantheon and then working how its various temples could be haunted now was a flight of fancy (or dark fantasy) in the best way for me.   Tahuum Itaqiin itself is also some kind of contender for Best World. For those who are new to this setting, it's a low fantasy, early gunpowder, Age of the Sail-esque supercontinent in which an emerging age of progress is threatened by dark forces, eldritch magic, and unhealed social divisions from past conflicts. Much of my published worldbuilding for Tahuum Itaqiin is focused on the Continent's arid Northwest and the prosperous but noticeably unequal coastal cities.   Perhaps in a future year, if I get good enough with CSS and over visual design, I'll feel brave enough to submit something for Most Beautiful World or whatever that category is called.   Unfortunately, life hasn't very accommodating to worldbuilding over the past few months, so those are all of my contest entries for 2024. The many half-finished articles sitting in my drafts will simply have to wait.   Thank you for considering my work among the veritable library of beautiful stuff here. Happy building and happy writing, as always!
