Foltudhe, meaning "return" in the Otor language, is an ancient and sacred practice of ocean burial within the Bren-Brehaer faith, performed to honor the dead and return their remains to the ocean, the source of all life. Here, it is believed they will be reunited with their ancestors and become one with the cycle of life and death. The Sacti people see Foltudhe as a way of paying respect to the deceased and showing gratitude for their life and contributions to the community.
Foltudhe is most often performed by trained and ordained members of the Bren-Brehaer clergy, though in theory all that is a pure heart. The ritual usually involves preparing the deceased's body according to strict religious guidelines, and then placing it on a funeral boat or raft that is set adrift on the ocean. The clergy will then recite prayers and perform other rituals to honor the deceased and send them on their journey to the realm of the dead.
