Withering from Renelli
My friend,
This magic is disturbing but I may have a lead. I've written a fragment of it side by side with a similar fragment from a captured Collective tome. The Collective has two methods of inflicting a 'withering' effect. The most common is extraction - they draw the life and vitality out of a thing and collect that energy as their own power. Failing that, their second method is destruction - they'll evaporate the moisture out of something, dismember a thing so energy can no longer flow within it, etc. This magic follows neither approach. What it seems to do is deprive the target of nutrients. If it were doing this to food, it would be like a curse on the gut - you could eat and your body would break food down but you would absorb none of it. The food would pass through you as pure waste, leaving you able to eat but eternally starved until you perished. This magic looks like it targets the Fae ability to connect to trees, but also their ability to keep songs. I think if any of these Fae sleep under a tree, that tree may become 'dead'... no longer able to connect with Fae to share old songs or to receive new ones. I'm no closer to removing it but if you can give them songs successfully without connecting to a tree, it may sustain their life. Regular "feedings" would be necessary and they would lose those songs over time… but it may buy enough time to break this horror of a curse.
