Ugnak the Tribesman

Native to the midwestern forests, the tribesmen split of long ago from their imperialistic and industrial brethren, preferring instead to live in the wild, to hunt in the wild, and eat in and from the wild. Surprisingly, they’re terrific at it. The main reason for death amongst the tribes of the west is not monsters, not plague, not hunger; it’s outsiders. Mostly crafty bandits, but sometimes human royal expansion is forcibly stopped by these wildlings, causing losses on both sides in the process. Whilst incredibly numerous, they simply do not have the numbers to combat the armed forces of the empire, so they changed their approach.   Guerilla tactics. Hit-and-runs. Supply interception. Horse killing. Tent burning. Weaponry theft. Annihilating the enemy without directly killing them. And it’s working. To this day, the royal armies just simply can not deal with the tribes’ cunning and ingenious tactics. The armies tried to send in magicians, specifically pyromancers. In return, the tribesmen burned down village after village after village until the pyromancers stopped (not a single villager got hurt in the process. The tribesmen were angry, not homicidal). They tried other types of mages, but the shamans and nature priests of the forests matched or even surpassed their enemy spellslingers. And so, after a long war, the bearfolk of the Halaran Forest finally managed to intervene, having tried but failed to do so due to the human leaders, through force. The bearfolk, led by Shaman Tok, pushed back the human expansion forces, and forced the humans to sign, and hold, a treaty forbidding them to expand into territories belonging to the tribes, or even miles upon miles of woodlands near them.   The unofficial, but largely recognized, chieftain of the tribesmen, Ugnak, had been the leader of the raids on the human expansionists and the woodlands strongest fighter. Today, he is vastly older, and leads the tribesmen as an immortal Shaman of spiritual powers beyond the minds of men. Not that he can’t kick your ass both verbally and physically with his quick, witty tongue and unparalleled martial arts, but having the forces of nature on your side seems to be a nice advantage the tribesmen willingly and happily accepts.
