Steilacoom, Washington (Still-a-come)
The first town of Washington overall, Steilacoom was named after one of the native tribes that lived there, the term Scht’ləqʷəm referring, supposedly, to the Woodland Pinkroot flower that grew in the area. Being a victim of settlement along with The Prairie that would become Lakewood, Steilacoom was incorporated first in 1854, becoming a centerpiece via lumber shipments and eventually having many of the states Firsts.
Now, it's a small residential town of history, lots and lots of money, and quaint silence, under the watchful and methodical eye of Azariah Faerber following the Cleansing Nights.
History
While the history of the area goes back far, it's rather simple to summarize. Following attacks on Fort Nisqually by the eponymous Nisqually and Steilacoom people, Fort Steilacoom was created to serve as a stronger defensive point. Two years later, the first sawmill in Washington was made and lumber began to be exported to San Francisco, with the city forming around it before being incorporated just three years later. As native people were displaced by the Medicine Creek Treaty, the Steilacoom people were not afforded their own reservation, as Steilacoom was planned to be the main city of the area and thus they did not want to put reservation area so near to settlers, so the Steilacoom people were pushed into the neighboring Puyallup, Nisqually, or Squaxin reservations. But, many refused to move away from their home, such as then-Chief Sam Young. From there, the history of Steilacoom has largely been the history of Tacoma, and the native people suffered similar fates to those in neighboring Lakewood. For the supernatural of the region, there is a point of deviation. While many Mages and Garou among the two tribes tried to fight against the settlers, especially following the wrongful death of Nisqually Chief Leschi, many of their number pealed towards the west instead, forming their private sanctums on the islands that are now Ketron and Anderson islands. They persisted there, creating secret passageways through the Umbra in tandem to save as many of their fellows as they could, and to hide and defend themselves from the settler Mages and Garou. Even during the height of The Weakness, these arcane places remain safe and strong, albiet private and elusive, but they serve as essential centers of community that lead to similarly structured and hidden Caerns and Chantries around the city, making them as much of a First as anything else in Steilacoom, being the First Safe Havens for their supernatural people following the settler influx.Demographics
Of it's roughly 6,500 citizens, 71.36% of them are White, 5.91% are African or African American, 1.57% are Hispanic or Latino, 6.33% are Asian, 0.3% are Pacific Islanders, 13.35% are Mixed Race, and 1.15% are Native American. The bare majority at 51% identify as Female at birth, and most citizens are between 20 and 60 years of age.
Supernatural Demographics
While being more appealing than Ruston was in the past, not many Kindred knock around Steilacoom as it's a costal desination. However, some have lived there since the cities founding, and some enjoy the ease of access it gives to different areas along the coastline of the Sound. Currently there are around two dozen there, including the new Baron Azariah Faerber, with Ventrue and Toreador being the most common. A decent amount of Awakened still live in the area, some being Dreamspeakers who are descended from the eponymous tribe, others being those who work with Nature and enjoy the forestry and water access. One can even find a smattering of Changelings and Wraiths among the quaint small town, being disconnected enough from the urban minutae of Tacoma overall for them to flourish better. The most populous supernatural in Steilacoom though are the Garou. Despite the new Kindred presence in the area, they live enough on the fringes to not mind their presence immensely, and the dense forestry that's technically a piece of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord territory is right outside the city limits, giving them plenty of space to roam around, both in reality and in the Umbra. The Children of Gaia and Hart Wardens enjoy the area the most, historically speaking.
