Snake charmer Profession in Tacillia | World Anvil

Snake charmer

Besides the need for moist air, serpiens had one more weakness. They were vulnerable to certain kinds of music. If someone played the right song, they became hypnotized for a few seconds, and during this period, they were easy to kill. The profession whose members excelled in mesmerizing the serpien with their music was called the snake charmers.
Snake charmers were the most acclaimed professions of the past. The constant threat of a serpien attack was less frightening if the people knew a snake charmer was nearby. In theory, it was easy to become a snake charmer because the candidates had to learn only a few songs, but learning any musical instrument wasn't for everybody. Usually, they used wind instruments, but any kind of musical instrument was acceptable if it could play high notes.
Many of them were members of armies. Having snake charmers as part of combats or secret missions improved the chances of the survival of other members significantly. In many armies, they even had their insignia and were part of special forces. However, their profession made them prime targets of the serpien who hunted the snake charmers ruthlessly.
Some snake charmers decided not to become soldiers, and they lived in various settlements. Still, every person highly respected them as one of the primary defensive lines during a serpien raid.
The importance of the snake charmers dwindled when the serpien finally were eradicated. Most of them gave up their profession and started a new life. A few of them tried to live on past glory or became actual snake charmers because their music had the same effect on regular snakes as on serpiens. For a while, this was an alluring sight to behold, but soon even the spectacle of charmed snakes became dull, and the legend of the snake charmers faded away.
If the news from the skat'ra is what we fear, we might need to reestablish the snake charmers
