Tyrant Spider

A fiersome being from the caverns and systems below the surface world, the Tyrant Spider rules their kind with utter brutality. Dramatically large and with an apetite to match, they will prey on other spiders rather than on insects. When a lack of food is available, they will even prey on one another. The full "monarch" Tyrant Spiders can grow to be larger than most sentient mortals, causing a serious threat to any area they inhabit.

Basic Information

Anatomy

like other spiders, they have four legs spread about a larger carapace, with large fangs and several eyes that grant an impressive field of vision. Blending in with the cavernous underground, they are usually found in medium and darkish tones, though some border on a lightish gray.

Ecology and Habitats

The Tyrant Spider is a perfect being of the Underdark and the various cave systems with low or no light. There is a small mystery in this; being that these caves did not exist in the original formation of T'sara; not until the Fey altered the world forever in the Sundering. Alongside, Darnahl, the God of Secrets and God of Spiders, did not create these Tyrant Spiders, or so he claims. Admittedly, it would have been within his aspect to keep such a thing to himself.   If he didn't, it means that these spiders were created by the Fey, or that a form of spider was altered to form these. What species that might have been is, admittedly, pure conjecture.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Spiders as a whole are a predatory animal, and the Tyrant Spider is no different. They are far less choosy in their prey than most spiders, and due to their larger size, require to eat more than most. As a result, rare cases of study of the great arachnid has found that they will eat other spiders as soon as anything else. They only seem to have any reservations for their own kind, but even that isn't absolute.   Their apetite naturally grows with their size, which is usually unsustainable. Like a tyrant, it consumes everything, friend and foe alike. It's territory can never be large enough. It's prey can never be large enough. As a result, the fully grown ones are exceptionally rare, as the places where amounts of food that are so plentiful are scarce below ground.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The size and composition of the Tyrant Spider's eyes make it an excellent dweller of the Underdark, and nocturnal predator of the surface world; seeing better in total darkness than most beings do during the day. This does however mean that it is incredibly susceptible to bright lights. Unwary adventurers with torches have been commonly targeted by the Tyrants, trying to put out the source of the painful light.
