Portable Fire Material in T'sara | World Anvil

Portable Fire

A versatile and minor item, this magical tool provides instant fire in small amounts.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

The outer glass must be as pure of contaminants as possible, at least upon firing, typically made no larger than a hip flask. An alchemical concoction is placed inside the glass and ignited. While the flame is still going, a stopper is placed in the top and a wizard or learned person with the correct wand or scroll will enchant the glass and contents. So long as the glass does not break and the stopper is not removed, the flame will be kept indefinitely, though the outer glass will be cool to the touch for the user.

Origin & Source

Giving credit to the ingenuity of their kind, the Portable Flame was first invented by a Goblin. A member of the Pathfinder Society, the ranger Grub had grown tired of trying to start campfires in wilderness during soaking rain storms or other unsuitable conditions. Having returned to civilization, he dabbled in Alchemy and with the help of a wizard friend, was able to find a way that a flame could be maintained in perpetual state to be used for these cases. Although the flame would last seemingly forever before opening, it did not have an infinite number of uses. Sparingly, he found that he could use one about twenty times before becoming unusable. Far be it from his end goal, it was still enough of a success to turn into a marketable item. The good has since spread through most of T'sara and been replicated by a number of imitators, though none have improved beyond it.

History & Usage

Everyday use

In it's original size, a portable flame is still used commonly to light flames for camps or the like. Industrious experimenters have taken the base mechanics and dramatically enlarged it. With glass containers the size of skulls or larger, the flame captured insight serves as a torch or other permanent lighting arangement.
