Phoenix Dragon Species in T'sara | World Anvil

Phoenix Dragon

A mythical being of increasing rarity, the Phoenix Dragon has birdlike qualities that make some question its relationship to other dragon types.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Phoenix Dragons resemble normal dragons in most respects. They are still enormous flying reptilian beasts. The most telling difference is that the Bat-like wings of normal dragons are replaced with feathery wings of a bird. The feathers are red and gold in color and often emit flame, like that of the Phoenix.

Genetics and Reproduction

Phoenix Dragons reproduce through eggs and insemination, same as both other dragons and the Phoenix. However, there is a peculiar nature of the Phoenix Dragon that has dramatically reduced their population, relative to their contemporaries. Where the Phoenix is reborn from its ashes in a perpetual cycle of rebirth, Phoenix Dragon rebirth is more metaphorical. A clutch of Phoenix Dragons will not hatch until they have been exposed to immense heat that is thought to be only be brought about in the fiery explosion that comes with the death of their parents. As a result, clutches of Phoenix Dragons are thought to be immense, as dragonlings must survive on their own from birth.

Ecology and Habitats

The rarity of the Phoenix Dragon in the common age makes determining its ideal habitat a difficult task. Thought to be on the verge of extinction, the only regions that they are thought to occupy are in active volcanoes, too hostile and difficult for most any other creature to inhabit.   If a new generation were to be born and live to adulthood, they may quickly be found throughout all of T'sara.

Behaviour

Phoenix Dragons are fiercely territorial and protective, especially as they reach their mature and reproductive stage. Adventurers proving themselves to mean no poor will may occasionally speak and interact with these dragons, if they can be found. Other dragons on the other hand, are almost always seen as a threat.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Deeply territorial and one of the most apex predators, the Phoenix Dragon has superb eyesight. Because of the volcanic environment it prefers, their hearing and scent is lessened compared to that of other dragons, but is still far superior to that of the bipedal Sentient beings that make up its prey.
