The Ice Shock
Geography
Located on the southern pole of Syshir, the Ice Shock is a large, flat continent covered in a layer of ice. Buffeted by unpredictable, strong winds, those who have made the journey to the Ice Shock have found permanent habitation near impossible.
While the continent is seemingly flat, with no discernable mountain ranges, the Ice Shock is splintered by large cracks and fissures. Many a research mission have found their graves down hidden, icy ravines. These ravines, however, provide a brief refuge from the storms on the surface, and even hardy flora managed to propagate deep underground on the ice shock.
Localized Phenomena
Those few mages from The Academy who have conducted research expeditions posit that the devastating winds and ice storms that cover the continent are magical in nature. Elemage Ineem believes The Ice Shock is where the final Barrier was constructed, and the storm has been positioned in order to protect a seal or sigil that might allow travel between the planes. Elemage Ineem based this theory upon the works of Explorer Yois, who disappeared attempting to find such a sigil.
Researcher Kellan has suggested that the storm is raw, untamed aether, bleeding into our world. Other mages have seen promise in this theory, as their powers seem bolstered while traversing the Ice Shock's storms. Unfortunately, Elemage attempts to curb the wind and sleet of the storm have been unaffected by the power increase.
Fauna & Flora
Notable fauna:
- Sil'ny - one of the few animals with a high body mass the grey and white-furred Sil'ny are one of the most dangerous predators to come across while sheltering in one of the Ice Shock's deep ravines.
- Zhug - small, chitin-covered hexapods that are drawn to researcher camps by light and heat.
- Krylla - large white-feathered avians that travel to the Ice Shock after they reach maturity to mate. They return to warmer climes to lay their eggs.
- Prokk - also known as Wizard's Bane, Prokk is a hearty, underground-growing root vegetables that need specific preparation in order to rid it of the toxins within. Done properly, however, a single Prokk can sustain a traveller for an entire week on the Ice Shock.
