Krylla (KRIH - lah)

Basic Information

Anatomy

A large avian, with wingspans between 1-2m in length, the Krylla is a sturdy, powerful creature. They host sharp, hooked talons, in a dark almost-black blue, four claws a piece, in an anatomical formation that is both raptorial and climbing-based in nature, thanks to a semi-zygodactyl arrangement that allows the back claw to switch between positions suited for either grasping or climbing.

Genetics and Reproduction

While Krylla spend most of the year in the warmer climes of the equatorial belt, they have a unique requirement in their reproduction. The ability to produce and fertilise eggs is only possible in the most severe of temperatures. During the coldest months of the year on Tinobi or Enthar, the Krylla's reproductive instinct is triggered, and they migrate to The Ice Shock, dwelling there only long enough for a flock to fertilise over 50% of their female population. The long flight back to more hospitable climates, nearly a month of resting on floating islands that are spaced distantly across the intervening ocean, is enough to gestate the eggs, and they return to their nests in time to lay. Should a flock be waylaid on their return journey, female Krylla will not lay until temperatures warm up once more.

Additional Information

Domestication

While difficult, there are some brave few among the Tinobi Shiften and the South Entharian Roamers that tame Krylla for use in hunting. The Krylla are not kind or gentle pets, they can carry off a small child, and if their nests are threatened they can kill a grown man.
Scientific Name
pagoaves kel'dynusi
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
To blend into their surroundings, the Krylla's plumage come in yellow, white, grey, or pale brown. Darkly coloured plumage on a Krylla is typically associated with "runts" of the litter, although their size isn't always lesser than that of their clutchmates. Dark Krylla are simply atypical and don't survive long in the wild.
