Redspear

Prophesized Guardians

Just over 100 years ago, elders of the clans engaged in a shared foretelling, a prophecy that stated there would be One, marked by the Gods, and a foreigner to their lands, that would cure the hardship of the lands and bring prosperity to the people.
The One will come to this land.
Born not of it, but will become of it.   Their feet shall bless the ground.
Their hands cure hardship.
Their mind prosper the people.   Surrounded by a circle of Clansmen,
For danger follows behind,
The One will come.
Not long after this prophecy, boys between the ages of 10 and 15 years began to find a small, perfectly circular mark, almost like a burn, appearing on their skin. The elders deduced, and declared, that this mark was of the Gods, and those boys would become the protectors that would stand by the side of The One. When their numbers reached fifty, exactly a year after the first Clansmen was marked, no more marks appeared. The Redspears formed, and with the cheers and blessings of their people, they headed out to find The One and bring them home.

A generation passed, and The One was not found. The Redspears, always foreigners in foreign lands, started to return to clan lands less and less, and their blessing and sacrifice started to... dim in the eyes of their people. They were no longer heroes of their story, but long-gone sons, who returned only long enough to retrieve their newest recruits before continuing their search for The One. While the Redspears are still valued amongst their people, it isn't always the celebration it might have once been, when a son is found with the mark upon him.

Mercenaries

In their journey to find The One, the Redspears eventually needed to find alternative forms of income, no longer able to continue their search while still relying on funding from Clanlands. Already elite warriors, their training extensive in order to prepare themselves for service to The One, they become quite effective. Within the last 10 years, the Redspears become notorious amongst the rich and famous, fighting small wars for Lords who can pay their high fees.

Their quest for The One isn't exactly put on the backburner, but the prophecy holds no leads, no hints towards The One's location, so they carry on.

Death

There are always 50 Redspears. When one dies, another in the clanlands is marked to take their place. All Redspears have a sense of where their fellows are, a kind of mystical binding to their brothers-in-arms. When a Redspear dies, a party of five (never the same as the five who last took the journey) returns to the clanlands with their fallen brother, so the family can inter the body on clanlands and complete the circle of life, allowing the newest Redspear to take his place, and their mark completing. It is not common knowledge that the return of the body is connected to the completion of the next Redspear's mark. The Redspears being unable to return to the clanlands with their brother's body is shameful, and discussing it with anyone, particularly the family of the deceased is a cultural faux pas. As such, an incomplete mark is unheard of, although there are some currently within their ranks whose marks have been closed by non-divine means.

Current Members

While there are no "official" ranks amongst the Redspears, they function with an unspoken, but still militaristic understanding of rank and file.
