Torukk - The Hunter of Death

Death, Knowledge, Undead

Originally, Torukk was just one among many of the reapers of Purgatory. However, he was able to grow in power, and was displeased with the state of the underworld. It was too often that the dead were not allowed their peace. Eventually, a calamity would fall upon the previous keeper, and Torukk would have to reap her himself. Now upon the throne, he set about overseeing the system in a way that he saw as the correct way.   The new keeper of Purgatory is widely known to be a hunter, something very tied up in his identity as a Reaper. His pretty would be those who tried to pervert the natural cycle of life and death, twisting it into undeath. While he tolerates those brought back to life through the proper ways, he abhors those who raise themselves into Undeath.   He does not see his ascension as something of a personal power play, but something he had to do. The balance of the planes are at stake if life and death come out of balance. He teaches that one should not fear death, but life is also something that must be lived to the fullest. One must find a balance between these two areas, and walk a path to create the fullest experience.   His church often finds it difficult to figure out what their God wants. The mystics who receive his revelations are often lost for words. Not because it is so shocking, but because it is so strange and alien to them. This leads to factions within the church, and arguments quite often. However, schisms are rare, as it is seen as part of the church’s history.   Debates, and deliberations are often central parts to religious service. A pair of the clergy going back and forth over a small point of wording or figuring out the correct practice is common. However, it is seen to be done in the best nature, and hateful words are rarely traded between disagreeing parties.   Domains: Balance, Grave, Hunt, Travel, Trickery, and Twilight.

Home Plane

Torukk was a reaper from Purgatory He ascended by killing the previous keeper, and taking her place. He now has now taken his place as the Keeper of Purgatory.

Appearance

Torukk is an alien figure to those who have set eyes on his corporeal form. While most of it is hidden behind a billowing black cloak, there are glimpses of his true nature told about through history. The most striking of these, and most consistent, are the tentacles he has for arms, and the blood red, glowing amphibian-like eyes.

Followers

Those who follow Torukk are those found on the outskirts of towns. They exist with one foot set in nature, and one foot set in the city. They will often travel between cities, offering their services for people in larger areas on a cyclical nature. As people come closer to their death, they often look to this church for answers on what is to come.

Histories above DC 20 are located in the Secrets section of this deity.
  • [Religion DC 5] - Torukk is the God of Death and Hunting.
  • [Religion DC 10] - Torukk was once just a reaper, having ascended to his spot after surpassing the last keeper of death.
  • [Religion DC 15] - While he was a Reaper, Torukk use to lead hunting parties out of Purgatory. For the most part, they were hunting down the undead. Though, at times, it would be for other prey.
  • [Religion DC 20] - The reason for Torukk’s reaping of the old keeper is more complex than is normally told. It seems that it wasn’t a mad power grab, but perhaps more of an obligation, and sorrowful action on the side of Torukk. Some say that he has regrets for his actions, but that he must stand by what he did.

Practises

Holy symbols and other artifacts are often made of bone. Churches are often more like ossuaries. The dead are either put through a sky burial, and the bones collected to construct their artifacts, items, and churches. Death is considered a normal part of the cycle of life, and people’s items should pass onto the community to continue on that cycle. Raising people into undeath is a travesty that must be corrected.

Tenets

  • Undeath is a perversion of the natural cycle.
  • Death is only one step in a person’s life. It should be celebrated, mourned, or avenged depending on how that death came about.
  • Do not let the fear of death keep you from enjoying life.
  • Do not throw your life away needlessly, it should be with purpose.

Sins

  • Practicing Necromancy and returning the dead to unlife.
  • Letting a hunt go to waste, the life of an animal should feed yours or your companions
  • All undead are your quarry, do not let them escape from you to the best of your ability
