Synkros: Universe in Feud

In the beginning, there were only the Creators, Kallisti and Areius. They are the lifeblood of the universe, and it is through them that suns, planets, and sentience came to be. By their will, they created the Ether as a gift to their children, a means by which they could reach out and interact with the universe around them in new and untold ways. Areius, Lawgiver, uplifted his faithful with technology. Megaengineered machines run by Etheric reactors, being made to the steady sound of progress and the clamor of industry. Kallisti, Whimweaver, gave to her children the power of raw Ether, an undeniable magic that takes hold and acts with a mind of its own. Together these forces have taken the world of sentient life by storm. Some of Kallisti’s chosen began to weave miracles, sight of future events, or the ability to move matter with their minds. The technovassals of Areius constructed megaliths capable of travel through the endless void, and gates that transport their user across miles in an instant.   They are locked in an eternal struggle; restriction forcing itself upon spontaneity, discord on structure. If there was anything principled or coherent about their fight at the start, it has long lost itself to any mortal understanding. For as long as any text in history remembers, it is naught but a stagnant tug‐of‐war between two equally‐indecipherable extremes. It is a fight not for a cause, but simply to win.   Their own power too matched to make any progress, they created the races of this galaxy to introduce new players—to do battle for them, in their name.   The Forsaken—a nickname, as what they called themselves is now but a victim of time—were the only ones known to make an attempt to turn against them. They fought for an unknown alternate cause, completely outside the concepts of order and chaos. It is the only time Kallisti and Areius have ever worked in unity: to tear them down, and to spend 700 years ripping all record of their philosophy from every atom in the universe. The race was mutilated beyond recognition, and unleashed upon their own creations to serve as a warning of what happens when their desires are spited.   The Ether itself is inscrutable; universities have spent centuries attempting to understand it, only recently breaking even a sliver of ground for their efforts. Its presence seems as much a help as a threat, for whilst it is the source of power upon which every civilization is based, the Creators could scour it from our worlds on a whim. Recently—and despite efforts to stop them, based on the fear that they too will be struck down—the technovassal college in Avalis has attempted to build an alternative energy source based on [???]. Time will tell how far they’re able to go with it… or allowed to go.   So long as at least one of them is satiated, the Creators are surprisingly apathetic to what their children engage in. Races specifically created by one of them have switched sides or formed sects within themselves; as their power is matched, one will always prevent their destruction by the other. Individualism has been allowed to flourish within a certain set of constraints.
