Kullanpihka

The Kullanpihka (old lyrian tongue for "amber beast") is a mythical monster out of old tales of haunted mines and caves. Its appearance can best be compared to a small white lizard, who's body looks half-decayed and is covered in amber fragments of different sizes. The fossilized resin casing the monster glows faintly in the dark, revealing its horrific dead flesh. Lurking in the dark of deep diggings, the Kullanpihka waits till some lost souls wanders into his realm. With its fast feet, eyes perfectly adapted to the dark and fierce fangs, any fight against the beast ends only one way. The prey is fast eaten and the Kullanpihka continues to live in the deep dark, waiting for the next meal.
Some kind of magic saved the lizards a long time ago from dying, preserving their life-force with them in the amber. When many years later humans and dwarves mined for precious amber, sometimes they found a now transformed Kullanpihka. Not knowing what they had in front of them, the miners carried on and eventually freed the preserved monster. Usually this meant the end of the ember mine had come. But since the beasts were enclosed in the dark for so long, they stay deep under the earth.
