Varl

"The snow drifted down silently through the stillness of the forest, and I pushed my hood back to take in the rocky pass ahead. A gust took the falling flakes and whipped them passed my face, stinging my eye with the cold. As the tears filled my eyes I strained to look to the path ahead, and it was then I caught a glimpse of the huge steel grey eyes that stared back at me through the white flakes. Eyes that were nearly fifteen feet above me."
The Varl are a race of large horned humanoids that grow to a great size, usually between 12 and 20 feet in stature, possess great strength and an ability to endure fatigue and damage. The horns are present in both male and female Varl.   The Varl are the oldest race in Heimur, and have dwelt in Graenlandir since before the dwarves even considered settlements and civilisation. The Varl have an inherent connection to one of the Elemental Planes, and though they practice little in the way of magic this heritage gives them an innate understanding of the world around them, the forces that flow through it and how to interact with it.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Varl are bipedal humanoids, with distinctive horns growing from their forehead. The horns vary with the elemental heritage of the Varl, for example those born with the Touch of Air have short to medium horns that are swept backwards from the forehead whereas those with the Touch of Fire have jagged forward facing curving ones.

Genetics and Reproduction

Standard mammalian reproduction, however female giants rarely give birth more than once in their long lifetime.

Ecology and Habitats

Varl tend to live in a climate that suits their Touch. Those with the Touch of Earth reside in mountains or hills, whilst those with the Touch of Water reside in coastal regions or by the banks of a river.
