The Doubtlessly Dreary Demise of the Dreaded Death Dear by Dutiful Dunoiposions

Almost sixty years ago the people of the north east corner of Regerwa fought a war that most other countries haven't even heard about. A disease spread among the population of Spear Deers that made them go insane, attacking everyone and everything in their way, not stopping until they died.   At that point this part of the world consisted of several small kingdoms and city-states with very little organisation between them. They were utterly unprepared for nature itself to turn against them in this way and suffered terrible losses during the first few years.

Start of the War

During the dead of winter the first diseased deer was discovered in the small district of Derenísos in the northen-most parts of what is today Dunoipos. Something was making the deer attack both people and other animals in the area, and they didn't hold up until they dropped dead. The disease spread fast among the population, quickly moving south. The people were utterly unprepared, it's one thing to defend your settlements against the rare desperate predator, it's a whole other thing to defend against dozens of dire deer that wants you dead.   People started fleeing their homes, leaving everything behind. The small kingdoms and cities simply did not have enough people to organise any kind of counter attack. But when the news of the epidemic reached the southern kingdom of Dunoipos they decided to to just that. It was the largest country in the area, the only you could actually call country, and they managed to get an army up in record time with the help from neighbouring kingdoms and people.

Soon over 30.000 soldiers, if you can call them that with their makeshift armour and simple weapons, stood ready. And seldom has an army been seen with such determination, this was their homes, this was not something created by greedy lords and ladies, this was the world itself that wanted them dead. And they were not gonna take that.
What do you do when nature itself turns against you? You take up your weapons and you fight the world with all your might.
— Excerpt from the book "War on the Death Deer"

Aftermath

Thanks to the army that had been gathered they managed to hunt down the deer, after all they weren't trying to hide. In this hunt every single deer found was killed, no matter if it seemed to have contracted the disease or not. They were simply not risking it. Still today the people are talking about the Death Deer, praying to their gods that they don't reappear.   However, as the people from Dunoipos swept up through the land they didn't just take control over the deer. They also conquered the kingdoms and states in the area, they were simply too weakened by that point that they couldn't resist, or they risked not getting the help they so urgently needed. Thus rose the huge Dunoipos Empire to power and they now control the whole north-eastern corner of Regerwa.
