Shipborn

Naming Traditions

Masculine names

Abrafo, Ade, Benjamin, Boris, Charis, Delfino, Dixon, Eddie, Echo-- names tend to originate from whatever culture predominantly occupies the ship.

Family names

Shipborn last names carry more weight than the first name. Due to the risks of having multiple generations aboard ships, last names are tracked closely, with intermarriage monitored to see which particular bloodlines from a family tangle with another. Even once the slow travel ship reaches its destination and future generations never have to experience slow travel, last names are still incredibly important as they track the lineage of Shipborn people.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Dealing damage to the ship's walls, ceiling or floor is one of the most egregious crimes one can commit. Shipborn will report these activities regardless of what their other views are, because they endanger everyone on board.

Common Etiquette rules

Common etiquette often involves not taking up frivolous space. Individuals who can pack themselves into smaller spaces are regarded as being more polite, as they are the ones who stay most out of the way.

Common Dress code

Shipborn individuals often don't have a dress code, unless the ship is the initial expedition group and their first generation of children.

Foods & Cuisine

A lot of dehydrated food and various nutrient mushes, supplemented with vitamins.

Funerary and Memorial customs

The dead are often burned in the ship furnace or are wrapped in blankets and spaced. When a child dies, the whole ship mourns, and the child's parents are allowed to select a planet close by for their child to be drifted towards-- the idea is that the child, never having gotten to live, will experience the new world as they break apart in the atmosphere.    If an infant dies, the parents will often commit suicide as part of the funeral.

Ideals

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is not required for reproduction for necessity's sake, and even when a couple does court it isn't often a process that carries much weight.
