Compass of the First Kid
This lightweight, glass, and silver compass belonged to the first child who was allowed to see the fairy world. His name was Sam. The delicate features of this compass make it all the more intriguing to those who find it.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
This item does function as a general working compass. A compass works by detecting the natural magnetic fields of the earth. The Earth has an iron core. It is part liquid and part solid crystal because of enormous pressure brought on by gravity. It is believed that movement in the liquid outer core is what produces the Earth’s magnetic field. The needle inside the glass and silver compass is magnetic and will always point north when being used in its mundane way.

Raw materials & Components
A BASEPLATE
This is a flat, rectangular surface that keeps the compass housing and is marked with lines, numbers, and other information.
SCALES AND RULERS These are the lines and numbers that run along the edges of the baseplate, showing distances on paper and conversions into actual distances.
DIRECTION OF TRAVEL ARROW This is usually a small triangle that points to the shortest edge of the baseplate away from the compass housing. When holding the compass flat in front of you, the arrow will point forward and away from you. When navigating, hikers use this arrow to point the way they're going.
DIAL This circle rotates around the housing. It's marked in degrees, going from 0 to 360 to make a complete circle.
NEEDLE This is the thin, magnetized sliver that spins in relation to the Earth's magnetic field and indicates the direction of north. It's the key component of a compass.
HOUSING The needle spins inside of this, which is enclosed and raised above the rest of the baseplate. The dial rotates around it.
