Clay Brick
A rough-edged, russet block the size of a man’s forearm, pitted with tiny air pockets and warm to the touch. Its flat faces still bear faint finger-press marks; one corner is stamped with a single notch—the “maker’s mark” used to tally daily output.
These firstrun bricks form the settlement’s hearths, walls, and future kiln expansion—each one a small, fired promise of permanence in a wilderness of impermanence.
Manufacturing process
- Dig & Sift – Laborers shovel past beach sand into a rich clay layer, piling clay beside the pit.
- Ball & Gauge – Each double-handful is rolled into a ball, then pressed against a measuring stick cut to brick length to ensure uniform volume.
- Mold & Dry – Balls are thumb-squared into bricks and sun-dried for one hour to stiffen the skins.
- Kiln Fire – Twenty bricks at a time are stacked over a driftwood–coral grate kiln; two-hour burn fuses the clay to hard ceramic.
- Tap Test – A finished brick rings with a dull “tok” when struck—proof it will bear shelter weight.
