The
cosantóirí sliabh (co-san-TOR-ee SHLIOW; “mountain protectors”) are the descendants of
Na Gleann — specifically of many of na Gleann's berserkers, fighters, and rangers, who broke off from the rest of the group when many
cailleacha chose to accept
Strahd von Zarovich as their dark god after the desecration of the fanes of the
Ladies Three. They are almost entirely confined to the hidden village
Corrangealai (cor-an-GAL-ee), in southern
Barovia, not far from the
Amber Temple and the
Tsolenka Pass bridge.
History
The cosantóirí split off from the rest of na Gleann nearly 400 years ago, and have been keeping to the mountains in the south of Barovia ever since. Among the group, Strahd is known as
croí scáth (KREE-ska; “Shadowed Heart;" alternately "CRISCO"), but although the old ways are kept and the Ladies Three are worshipped, the group has largely evaded Strahd's wrath and persecution by keeping to themselves, and by helping keep wanderers away from the Amber Temple. While this is a benefit to Strahd in that it keeps would-be competitors away from sources of power, the cosantóirí guard the Temple out of a knowledge of the evils within it, and an unwillingness to allow others to become as corrupt as von Zarovich himself.
