Before Serkatha became Serkatha, Goddess of Spiders, the mistress was much less personified.
She was the Dark One, one of the three divine beings that elvenkind worshipped and her followers became the Sumraki-Ashaī after the War of the Ancients and the Great Exodus that followed.
Unbeknownst to all living beings the Dark One was the collective consciousness of all outsiders native to the Realm of Shadow.
When the realm was destroyed almost completely most of them perished leaving behind only few who now depended desperately on the worship of their Sumraki-Ashaī followers; hence they led them underground to guarantee the survival of themselves and their worshippers.
